Roger’s almost birthday run from Birse to Ballater, via Gannoch, HoCat, CockCairn etc to Mt Keen, then back over to Glen Muick by the single track. With D&SW, PM & J as well as R. Everyone was very sociable so it was an easy enough pace throughout. Still feeling it by the end mind! And woosed the return bike ride option too. Gave the leki poles another test drive, more successfully than last summer.

From Birse up the Newmill track and round the back of Carnferg to Oh Gorse. Then did a recce of a line along the watershed of the forest where a bit of single track is starting to form. ~80% rideable along to join in with the south to north path leading to the top of Chutney. And back down by that. Nice chill ride and enough for today.

Brief visit to LI to sort / check a couple of things. Nice run out along the river then over to Glencanisp Lodge and back by the road. Good to do something a wee bit flatter and faster paced.

Cuillin reccie day 2 with FL, GB, SS & A. Wet start to the day with cloud down on the ridge so not sure what we would manage to achieve. Headed round to Sligachan to have a look up towards Am Basteir. Was gradually drying out with cloud lifting a bit and reached the col between AB and SnaG I without any difficulty. Decided to explore further up the AB east ridge and reached the Bad Step without difficulty. Decided this wasn’t for down climbing unless we roped up, so back-tracked to try and pick up the bypass route, but failed to pinpoint where we were meant to head off the ridge. Lots of loose sxxxxy stuff on damp angled slabs which didn’t do much for confidence, so eventually decided it wasn’t the day for it and headed back down the way we came. Very different feel to the place today in poorer conditions. Out for 5.5h total, but v easy paced.
Useful couple of days reccie, but still various decisions to be made about the relay and could really do with an additional someone who knows the lines on the ridge well.

Cuillin reccie day 1 with SS, A, MdlT & FL, GB for the first part. From Fairy Pool cp up onto Sgurr Thuilm, then onto the main ridge at Sgurr a Mahdaidh and north all the way through to Bruach na Frithe with descent off the north ridge. Multitudinous sections of scrambling; mostly lost of fun, a few requiring slightly more focus and rope out for one short down climb. Ideal conditions- dry with plenty of sunny spells and got better as the day went on. Great to have a crack at this with confident & competent companions. Just an all round brill day really :-))
Out for 7.5 h total so back pretty late & hungry after starting at 11:45!
