Orienteering race 53:00 [4] 6.8 km (7:48 / km)

British relays WO with AM and EG at Cannop ponds. Left too much of myself in the forest yesterday to feel up for this today, but was hoping for a pleasant cruise round. Left ankle was sore so taped it up but it felt uncomfortable running. Turned out that the forest really wasn't very inspiring so was hard to motivate myself to race. On auto-pilot for most of the race which resulted in a mess up at one control near the end. Still good to get a WO team result.

Note

Two big targets for the early part of the year successfully achieved. Next main focus is the HX in June, so plan is to up the training volume again and get some good miles in over the next 5 weeks.

Orienteering race 1:02:00 [5] 8.3 km (7:28 / km) +190m 6:42 / km

BOC New Beechenhurst FoD. Very different to the rest of this year's O. Map somewhat lacking in places and took a few legs to figure out what to trust. Compass and looking up were the most useful techniques. Ran well, just a few hesitations in the circles with the pits. Hard pushed to trim much time off. Wee panic at the 2nd last control when I couldn't see the feature. My calf conveniently chose this point to cramp up and as I stretched it out I looked up and saw it just metres away, with a nicely faded kite.
1st 5' clear of LR and JP.

Jog out to the turning area before buzz's track then some strides on the first part of the track (not taking any risks) and back over the hill.

DW from pull-in between gliding strip and Dinnet, to Ballater station and back the same way. Good steady pace on the way out in 37.5, then pushed it on the way back to break 70'.

With J by the DW to the A93 bend and down to river bank, along past Dess Mill then up to road corner and back. Still low on energy.

From ToEss up towards Baudy Meg - a right slog which I didn't relish today. Then along and down by the diagonal track through the trees, part way out to 2 bridges and all the way back along the east side of the river.

10 x 1'+1' round Loch Kinord. OK once I got going.

The rest of the route round the Loch. Legs in pretty good shape post skiing.
