Hiking 1:39:01 [1] 5.83 km (16:59 / km) +340m 13:09 / km
ahr:107 max:160 slept:3.5 shoes: Saucony Excursion

Up and out early round to Little Town for this hike up to Catbells and down the ridge to Swinside Inn... unbelievable conditions - wind (particularly) and rain on the summit forced us to only be able to move forwards by sitting on backsides. Dog was terrified too! A tough reminder that the Lakes can be brutal whatever the season...
11 AM

Off-road running hills 54:12 [4] 6.77 km (8:00 / km) +337m 6:25 / km
ahr:156 max:199 shoes: Saucony Excursion

Left Sarah and a very bedraggled Cocoa at Swinside Inn and ran back to the car via the Cumbrian Way track (gorgeous through woods and alongside Derwent) then up the brutal climb to Hause Gate and back down to Little Town. HR and Garmin suggests 'Highly Impacting'... I'd say!

Yoga 22:00 [1]
slept:8.2

Legs were pretty sore today so opted for welcome return to yoga - used Yoga for Runners (Adriene). Worked a treat - apart from some minor interruptions by Cocoa!

Terrain training hills 1:35:36 [4] 13.74 km (6:57 / km) +421m 6:02 / km
ahr:140 max:176 slept:5.7 shoes: Saucony Excursion

Had intended to try the Kentmere Horseshoe but was too late to get a parking space so headed south to Dalton and did a wonderful run around Hutton Roof Crags and beyond to Farleton Knott and back - met up with a SROC guy (Ian Porter) and did 30 mins with him which was nice. Terrain is tough and the two areas would make an awesomely tricky area...

Wednesday Aug 28, 2019 #

Note
slept:6.5 (rest day)

Busy morning then IKEA afternoon into evening - was going to run from Yealand home but was too late and seemed sensible to rest legs for one day. Hoping to do Kentmere tomorrow...

Cycling 1:05:55 [3] 21.43 km (3:05 / km) +217m 2:56 / km
ahr:121 max:166 slept:7.8

Started out with Sarah to Levens Hall then up through the village, Sedgwick, Crosscrake, Milnthorpe and back on Marsh Fm Road. Legs still too sore for running so took online advice to get on the bike which was nice. Weather lovely for cycling too - forecast rain nowhere in sight.
5 PM

Note

Use the River Kent for a 10-min cold bath to ease DOMS...

Wonderful walk with Sarah and Cocoa through Levens to Sizergh and back... ended with reviving dip in the River Kent. Thighs battered and especially bad descending.

ahr:161 max:183 shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 300

Patterdale Dog Day Fell Race (Arniston Crag horseshoe): first fell race proper with long tough climb up to the tops, a lovely stretch up high then brutal, technical descent. Suffered on th climb and was drifting back; revived on the tops and descended well, taking a few places again. Beautiful weather and good fun. Next up - Barrow Fell (Keswick) on Monday.

Cracking morning run from home to Arnside Knott via all the interlinking woods... some stunning terrain, including the Fairy Steps (around which needs mapping and an event!). Finished with an ascent to the top of the Knott to meet Sarah.

Running warm up/down 32:00 [2] 4.0 km (8:00 / km) +60m 7:27 / km
slept:7.4 shoes: Saucony Excursion

Before and after the race, including an exploration of Paddock Heald nr Rusland which looks amazing for terrain reps over autumn/winter.

Off-road running race 41:44 [5] 7.8 km (5:21 / km) +263m 4:35 / km
ahr:162 max:185 shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 300

Rusland Show Fell Race - went out perhaps a little too hard and struggled on the main climb up from the road; settled once beyond and onto the fells proper - mostly tracks, with some tight and soggy paths too. Very pleased to have done this and got back into proper (running) racing - pleasantly surprised that my descending was stronger than the local boys I was in the vicinity of... Lots of work to do, but a lovely return to racing.

Off-road running race 1:16:20 [4] 13.45 km (5:41 / km) +298m 5:07 / km
ahr:148 max:178 slept:8.5 (injured) shoes: Saucony Excursion

Lowther (Trail) Run - DNF. Really enjoyed the experience and getting back into a proper race situation (really can't remember the last time I did this - National XC in 2015??) and on a lovely mixed terrain course (in wind and rain too!). Felt relaxed and very much in control, but sadly the heel pain worsened, impacting also on the rest of the right leg. Abandoned at the Askham Common road (c. 8.5K) and loosened shoe which enabled me to jog easily back to the castle. Overall, more positives than not.

Saturday Aug 10, 2019 #

Note

Had thought about cycling to Yewtree but wind and rain would have made it fairly treacherous. In the end, we had to drive Aunty P down to Manchester to be assured of a train back to London. Proper wind and rain day!

Awesome ride (in cracking weather) from home to Grasmere via Natland, Kendal, Rt 6 to Wind then from Ambleside to Skelwith and up and over Red Bank - tough first Lakeland proper climb: 1.14K at 9%. Descent was a bit hair-raising due to cars and water on my side of the road...
6 PM

Fitness training 50:18 [2] 2.62 km (19:12 / km) +2m 19:08 / km
ahr:116 max:149

Lawn-cutting - fascinated to see how far and intense it was. Garmin says 'some benefit' :). Jogging the longer strips and mower was struggling on some of the longer and mossier grass.

New loop - Hev Head, Hincaster Hall and back around over the Head... walked last bit through the village as heel sore descending on tarmac. Still painful and last bit seems to be taking an age to clear up - now a week old.

Next time, I WILL wear my Garmin as I suspect there is quite a bit of distance in this and decent AHR. Five lawns with Hatty (and plenty of weights with the constant emptying of the sack!). :)

Note
slept:7.0 (injured)

Woke in the night with sore heel; first thing was agony until got moving a little; took it as easy as possible - resting on Lunan beach and driving as little as possible. Not disappointed to have missed Day 4 but gutted about tomorrow - Craig a Barns a treat.
