riding (Brownhill Creek) 1:07:00 [3] 19.5 km (3:26 / km)
(injured)

After running around on hard surfaces in O shoes last night my heel was really sore, far worse than it usually is in the mornings, and I couldn't put weight on it at all when I got up this morning, so I had to stand up Zara despite having suggested a long run together, and I went for a ride instead. At least that way my foot only hurt when I put it on the ground.
10 AM

Note

Attack of the Killer Masseuse.
The ankle I tweaked a couple of weeks ago is part of the heel problem and also my calves are super-tight, so this was super-painful.
Afterwards we went to visit my grandfather for his 99th birthday.

Note

Sad day for Discworld fans. There will never be any more books written by Terry Pratchett, anywhere in the multiverse :(

(For those who aren't converts, this is the scifi/fantasy equivalent of losing Robin Williams. Admittedly I don't myself have enough imagination to enjoy scifi/fantasy - except for Pratchett. What's not to love about a series full of sarcasm and political/social commentary, even if it is set in a flat-earth world supported by 4 elephants on the back of a giant turtle?)

orienteering (Shepherds Hill) 30:00 [4]
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon

Bridget set training for the juniors and it was FUN :)

Entrée was a star relay in which I was paired with Leith. He runs fast!

Main course was a vampire-O. I haven't done one of these for years and I was determined not to get caught by a vampire. This involved a lot of ducking and weaving and running away as fast as I could from the control I really wanted to punch, and at one point hiding in a thicket while Meredith prowled around the outside. I thought Angus was going to help her catch me but he went somewhere else and I made my escape, by bolting straight up the creek embankment with my lungs threatening to explode. This was great interval training and I managed to collect all 15 controls without getting vampired; even though Josie looked so sweet and innocent lurking by the closest control to the finish, I wasn't fooled...

running (Belair) 1:11:00 [3]
shoes: Asics GT-2000

From Long Gully we went up Saddle Hill (the track, not the road) then down QJD, making the most of the perfect autumn weather. Legs a bit ploddy to start with but made it up the hill ok. Not sure how relevant hill training will be to a 4 hour rogaine at Goolwa, though!

Definite struggle tonight, didn't even make it into Shepherds Hill. Then went and sat in (the final?) Easter meeting for 3 hours.

I've seen the photos from the weekend's NOL races and realised that I am completely squarely built - in an Arrows top I look like a brick on legs :( Then again, it's not everyone who has the potential to impersonate a Lego figurine.

Glutes much better today (yesterday I had trouble when standing up and sitting down) so I fed them some chocolate and went for a sunset trot around Mitcham. Tiredness manifested pretty quickly though and so did the old neuroma although I'm hoping that's just because these shoes have short laces and so I have to tie them pretty tightly.

Red Hands Cave - Campfire Creek loop from the entrance to the Blue Mountains National Park at Glenbrook. Haven't done this for about 18 months and was very out of practice on the rough stuff, although managed the slog back up the hill from the causeway at the end ok. Glutes were hammered afterwards from going down numerous steps, and I am in awe of anyone who's running 6FT next weekend - but Glenbrook's always a nice run, and I saw a lyrebird :)

Also, this one's for Lizzie, because of the spiderweb facials I received.

orienteering race (NOL sprint final) 18:53 [4] 2.9 km (6:31 / km)
shoes: Asics GT-2000

UNSW @ Kensington, which was rather fun. I warmed up up the hill on the road outside so I knew what to expect from the stairs, and actually they didn't seem too bad. From the start there wasn't much thinking time and I managed to read ahead quite well, I thought, taking the more straightforward left routes to both 7 and 8, although on 8 I then thought I'd better not jump the corner of the garden bed (even though it turns out the map would have allowed me to). Punched 9 just after Phoebe and then confused the crap out of myself on the very short leg to 10 - after I'd gone down the indoor stairs I suddenly didn't know which alleyway I'd popped out into, but a panicked look at my compass and reorientation of map got me back on track pretty quickly. Not sure if I took the best route to 7; Katelyn belted past me & WATash here then I was hesitant about crossing the garden bed on the exit from 13 so they both ran away from me and I spent the rest of the race trying and failing to catch up to Natasha. Good course, kept me thinking, and I ran ok but assuming I only lost about 30 sec on hesitations and garden-bed avoidance, still think I'd like to be able to run a minute faster by Easter.
