Orienteering race (Brown Y) 50:39 intensity: (15 @0) + (14 @1) + (48 @2) + (12:26 @3) + (29:45 @4) + (7:11 @5) *** 3.77 km (13:27 / km) +35m 12:52 / km
ahr:140 max:169 spiked:11/12c shoes: 2022 VJ Falcon 6.5. GA

UNO Boulder Dash day 1 at Hollis Town Forest; Brown Y course (F65 and above, M80 and above), 3.3km, 55m climb nominally. Car thermometer was saying upper 60s when we started (mid 70s when we finished) and sunny.

I had forgotten to get my watch started to find satellites, but pressed start anyway at the start punch, so the time is right but the track doesn't start until about #1 or just after.

#1 and #2 were trail runs most of the way. I also popped out to the trail between 7 and 8. Judy K had started ahead of me; I almost caught up at 7 and passed her after 8 where I skirted the marsh en route to 9 on the south side. Only error was after leaving the trail to 10 I headed for the wrong hilltop and ended up a bit SW of the flag. I would have appreciated cuts in the circles and line here as 10 and 11 were close to each other with a purple line in between that obscured the contour details.

Picked up a mylar balloon after 11 and carried it to the finish. Second F70 today behind Janet F (who was three minutes faster). About 25 seconds behind Sharon (F75+).

Note

Nature observations from yesterday: one deer running away, and one tick, attached to my shoulder but removed last night. That's two attached ones so far this year.

12 PM

Orienteering race (Yellow) 36:52 intensity: (6:01 @1) + (29:16 @2) + (1:35 @3) ** 3.03 km (12:11 / km)
ahr:107 max:133 spiked:14/14c shoes: Keen RidgeFlex M7W 2021

Sore from yesterday's outing (mostly lower back), so just walked the yellow course. The first several flags were visible from a distance (just line yourself up in the correct direction and you could see them across a field or through the open woods), but later-on-in-the-course ones were more technically challenging. It had rained there earlier but mostly stopped while we got ready and started. By the time I'd finished it was lightly raining again. Upper 50s.

Found one metallic balloon which I left near a control point, along with numerous shotgun shells.

2 PM

Orienteering-related 49:00 intensity: (24 @0) + (4:08 @1) + (40:00 @2) + (3:59 @3) + (29 @4) ** 2.9 km (16:52 / km)
ahr:109 max:146 shoes: Keen RidgeFlex M7W 2021

Changed my shirt and went out to pick up 12 easier controls, some of which I'd visited on the yellow course. Raining lightly at first, then a bit heavier. Downpours and thunder waited until after I returned with my load of soggy control flags, punches, and stakes.

Picked up the metallic balloon I'd dropped off on the yellow course, along with another I saw not far from another control I was picking up.

Kudos to Lena and Sam who set the courses and were out in it all day!!
