Note

On the drive up to the park yesterday we noted an orchard/farm stand selling peaches which are several weeks gone in our local area, so on the way back to our lodging we stopped to get some, both yellow and white. Now we just need them to ripen a few more days. Looking forward to fresh peaches in September! (Someone was selling apple cider donuts too but we didn't stop for any of those.)

Orienteering race (Brown Y/"Tan") 50:20 intensity: (43 @0) + (11:53 @1) + (31:13 @2) + (6:31 @3) *** 2.43 km (20:42 / km) +26m 19:40 / km
ahr:107 max:131 spiked:8/8c shoes: 2022 VJ Falcon 6.5. GA

We returned to Pawtuckaway (after a nice visit/dinner with Glen's sister the night before) to O again (not a ranking event). Glen did a longer course, but I decided to take it easy again and do the shorter Brown course (designed by Peter Goodwin), after looking at the other Brown which crossed the areas logged relatively recently. 2.1 km, 55m climb nominal, though I'm not sure where the climb counts come from. Temp was already in the low 70s when we arrived but the clouds/overcast kept it from being too oppressive; it was humid enough to make me sweat even at my slow pace.

Slow and uncertain leaving the start/finish area which was busy on the map, even at 1:7500, but eventually cleared the finish circle and could see the mapped details. Woods seemed more rocky or had more downed things underfoot so a little slower going, and I was trying again to keep my heart rate down (wore a strap both days), so I nailed the controls well. Fast enough for a good 16 minutes ahead of 2nd place when we left, with 4 more people out on the course. Splits will be posted eventually, I suppose.

To start of UNO NRE at Pawtuckaway. Temps in 70s already when we arrived.

It was here at Pawtuckaway that I participated in my first ever A meet, on the orange course in F-open, 30 years ago (Oct 1992) when the US orienteering community also hosted an orienteering World Cup race here, with plenty of sponsors and prizes. Made quite the impression on me, and I kept coming back for more.

Orienteering race (Brown X) 1:25:49 intensity: (4:15 @1) + (53:37 @2) + (26:11 @3) + (1:46 @4) **** 4.5 km (19:05 / km) +45m 18:11 / km

Brown X course, 3.8km (110m climb?), 1:7500 map

Determined to go slower than usual to try to keep my heart rate lower and not push things. My plan was slow and steady and I seemed to manage pretty well. My non-spiked control was #4 where the hills at the end looked a bit different that I had pictured; also I didn't read the description at first and thought I was looking for a hill when I actually wanted a reentrant between two hills. I didn't hit either but did recognize the hill as the one to the south with boulder clusters and corrected.

I lucked out a bit to #5 as there were a couple of cadets also looking for it and I saw where they punched (I was unsure how far I'd gone at the time).

To 6, after I crossed the beaver dam I headed S on trails as far the intermittent marsh near a trail bend due E of the control. Carefully followed features until I hit the green marsh, which I decided to skirt around to the S, thus the wiggle there.

Slow and steady worked out for me. When we left there were only two folks finished in my class (not sure how many registered...) and I was 1st. Also was ahead of an M65 and an F60.

Note
(rest day)

Drove to NH to go orienteering this weekend.:-) Rented an AirBnB (basement level of someone's house) near Derry.

We ate dinner at Backyard Brewery S of Manchester where the food was excellent and the beer fine (I had a flight, but they only had a couple of IPAs; the maple salmon, and the brisket, were quite good).

Jordan Parkway trails. Explored along the creek on a trail I'd ridden once or twice. Stopped to move unnecessary small logs off the trail too. Then went to my preferred-trails area to play, before heading out to cross the creek again near the community gardens. Encountered Glen coming the opposite way in three different areas. :-)

Clear skies, about 80...really nice riding day.

Little Lehigh Parkway while Glen ran. Mid 60s and light rain showers...I carried an umbrella.

Yoga 50:00 [1]

Deanna's class focused on a modified "heron" pose...lots of hip openers, along with core strengthening.

Covid day 10...or is it? Negative home rapid test...hurray!

Oakhurst loop CCW with a bit through the neighborhood at the end. Low 80s, mostly overcast, a bit humid.

Avoided the short but steep uphill on (potentially busy) Oakhurst by taking a side road and climbing there (Balsam-Laurel-Bittersweet). Local kids tried to sell me lemonade but I forgot I had money in my water pack until I was too far away to turn back. It probably would have made their day.
