Walking 43:06 intensity: (26:05 @1) + (17:01 @2) 4.12 km (10:28 / km)
ahr:99 max:119 shoes: Hoka Bondi7--W9D

Park and neighborhood walk; overcast and about 32F, with a slight NE breeze and a few snow flurries.

Forgot to stop watch when I returned home (distracted by a neighbor being taken in an ambulance...she was sitting up, so perhaps a fall? She lives alone). Adjusted time and distance.

Note

I've been keeping the brace + sneaker on all day today. Maybe by tomorrow I can ditch the brace.

Note

Ankle still tweaky but slightly less so; feels better using DonJoy brace and a sneaker to stabilize it.

Orienteering race 59:18 intensity: (28 @0) + (15:52 @1) + (10:58 @2) + (19:56 @3) + (11:46 @4) + (18 @5) *** 4.56 km (13:00 / km) +23m 12:41 / km

DVOA President's Cup / Jeopardy-O at Bellevue, site of the DVOA NRE sprint last fall, designed and set by (now-outgoing) president Tom O.

He laid out 48 controls with a 60-minute time limit (with severe overtime penalties*) Score-O. At each control there was a laminated card with a question and 4 possible answers. We were to pin-punch or mark our specially designed control cards in the correct box corresponding to the right answer. For every answer we got correct we earned the value of that point (31-78). I visited 25 controls but (after checking after the race) got at least two wrong; but I did go to one of the Double Jeopardy points and I think answered it correctly, so will earn double points for that one. Tom will work on results (probably tonight), so we really don't know at this point who won.

I thought it was loads of fun despite a lot of extra work for the course designer.

*50 points deducted for the first minute over; that amt doubled for each ensuing minute.

Temps were in the mid 30s and the sun was out during the race, though there was a bit of breeze before the race and in open areas. Hands warmed up once I got moving.

Rules:
"The map has been divided into 6 different sectors, each of which corresponds to a Jeopardy category. The category topics and questions are orienteering-related. The total points available in each category are the same: 436 points. Within each category on the map are 8 controls. At each control flag, you will find a laminated card on top of the flag showing the control number and the Jeopardy question along with 4 possible responses: A, B, C, D. You must pick the response you believe is correct and then use the pin punch (or your permanent marker) to mark your response in the corresponding A, B, C, or D box on the control card. You will only receive points for a control if you answer the Jeopardy question correctly. The difficulty of the questions generally increases with the control number (e.g. question at control 78 will be much more difficult than that at control 31). You might want to keep this in mind when formulating your strategy for which controls to visit. Also, two of the controls have been randomly designated as “Daily Doubles.” These will be marked as such on the question card. If you answer a Daily Double question correctly, you will receive double the point value for that control. There are no electronic punch stations at the controls. To record your Finish time, you must punch the electronic punch Finish box on the sawhorse on the east side of the pavilion. Then proceed to Download at the pavilion. At Download, you must download your finish time and turn in your control punch card so that your Jeopardy responses can be recorded in an Excel spreadsheet for the official scoring. Note that overtime penalties are rather severe so you should plan on finishing within the 1 hour time limit."

Orienteering (Control pick up) 48:56 intensity: (9 @1) + (7:17 @2) + (37:14 @3) + (2:22 @4) + (1:54 @5) ** 2.41 km (20:19 / km) +15m 19:42 / km
ahr:125 max:168 12c shoes: Hoka Bondi7--W9D

Picked up 12 controls fairly close in to the start/finish, including some I'd skipped in the race.

I missed some splits, so not all controls are marked. Took split after collecting/packing up stands.

Note

Post-race review of Control order:
45-32-65-76-68-
77-63-58-75-70-
48-36-49-60-72-
73-78-61-67-71-
74-54-31-64-33
1500 starting points (before penalties for wrong answers, or addition for Double Jeopardy) of a potentially perfect score of 2733 (2616 I forgot to add in the Daily Doubles).

(Edited to add:)
Results are here. I got 7* of the 25 I visited wrong, putting me in 11th place out of 25 competitors/teams.

*Two incorrect answers; five "correct" answers punched in the incorrect box.
:-(

I did not wear any ankle braces today, and my left ankle is paying for the neglect....
