Hiking 2:39:00 intensity: (1:15:31 @0) + (45:07 @1) + (28:24 @2) + (7:07 @3) + (2:51 @4) 4.9 km (32:28 / km) +98m 29:31 / km
ahr:88 max:162

Trails (sandy and rooty; occasionally rocky) at Point Lobos Reserve south of Carmel. Stopped to take in views of Pebble Beach, birds (egrets, cormorants, gulls, brown pelicans, and some type of hawk tbd), sea otters, sea lions, and a harbor seal. There might have also been some guillemots around (one of the viewpoints or islands was named for them), but we're not sure whether we saw any.

Then driving toward West Sacramento at rush hour where we're staying tonight before traveling home. Phone batteries running down and accidents ahead meant we decided to stop at Starbucks to refuel the phones (I got a large iced tea too). Will proceed when delays are shorter.

Orienteering race 21:05 intensity: (2 @1) + (1:04 @2) + (6:23 @3) + (13:29 @4) + (7 @5) **** 1.97 km (10:41 / km) +13m 10:21 / km

US Sprint Champs at Cabrillo College, upper area. 1:4000 map
Sprint 3, shared with the other older classes as well as the under 12s, 2.0km, 55m climb nominal. Sunny and temps in low 70s

Out of the start everyone climbed the stairs (purportedly to the start triangle, though I don't remember them saying that to me), and it took me that long to find the triangle and the first leg. But then I settled in and took my time looking at the legs before taking off.

I guess I lucked into the good route to 14 (over the crossable wall) after I saw someone else go there...checked my map to be sure it was viable, and managed to finish 1st in F65, a bit ahead of Janet F (who won the other two days). No super difficult traps or upper/lower tricks if you looked closely.

Edit: My watch showed 20:11, but the splits printout showed me at 21:05. I'll adjust it if they load splits to AP and I need to match things up.

Orienteering race (Relay) 42:41 intensity: (18 @0) + (3 @1) + (12 @2) + (8:14 @3) + (25:06 @4) + (8:48 @5) **** 4.2 km (10:09 / km) +59m 9:29 / km

Club sprint relay, EMPO "8-pt" team (16, really), leg two (between Janet F and David H., who started in the mass start about 12 minutes after I had started). A few controls where we had raced in the morning, then we crossed a pedestrian bridge over busy Soquel Ave and did a few butterfly loops before heading back uphill to a few more controls back in the northern part of the map.

Went to the end of the wrong building on way to 8; looked at the tempo control first in the center of the butterfly, and was a bit confused heading from 10-11, so lost seconds on those three.

Finished and downloaded, but no splits were available, so we'll see how we did, maybe, at some point. I knew David would head out in the mass start so didn't worry about finding him at the end to tag.

Maybe we'll see results by the end of the week?

US Nationals Long at Big Basin Redwoods, 2.3 km, 135m climb. 1:10000 map

Better time today, no major multi-contour stream crossings. Lost a bit of time by heading straighter to 8 instead of looping around to the left because vegetation was thick, but no problem finding the control (Sharon went that way too, passing me along the way).

From 1-2, I climbed to the road then contoured around the hill (and climbed over the logs) to the trail below the ditches to be sure which one to climb up.

On the route choice leg from 4-5, I angled SE down the hill, crossed the road, and hit the trail that went up the hill.

Walk from arena to starts of the Middle at Big Basin Redwoods. Temps already warming up into the upper 70s or low 80s, sunny and DRY. I had a Vitalyte mix in my water bottle, too, but didn't want to drink it all before I started. They had some water at the start, too.

Orienteering race 1:01:00 intensity: (4 @0) + (53 @1) + (8:21 @2) + (25:08 @3) + (23:05 @4) + (3:29 @5) *** 2.85 km (21:26 / km) +94m 18:23 / km

Middle F65 brown course at Big Basin Redwoods west of Boulder Creek, CA. 1:7500 map, 5m contours. 2.0 km "beige" course 5, 125m climb stated.

Bit of a mixup with start times (so I heard) about 40 minutes before I started messed up official times (I think) for some people (no start boxes except for Open and late starters) because my splits printout has me at two minutes longer than my watch. One possibility is they fell behind checking people in and then adjusted the big start clock to catch up.

I think the orienteering was pretty straightforward, just slow in the terrain which had deep creek valleys to be crossed with not much opportunity to avoid the big climbs back out.

Only mess up was going to 5 when I hit the trail to its east and didn't positively identify where along it I was but just plunged into the woods. i was a bit too far north and corrected off the stream farther along. (D'oh!)

Third behind Janet F and Sandy for 2019 Middle Champs in F65.

Walked to the model controls that were along trails, to get an idea of the mapping style and control locations.

White woods have some very large diameter trees in them! Darkest green is to be avoided (the thickly branched scratchy shrubs look vicious).

Paulina Peak in Newberry Volcanic NM, overlooking the top of the Big Obsidian Flow which is a mile long!

Climb assumes we jumped down the cliff face a bit; probably more like 80m.

Note

Brewpubs tried this trip:
Deschutes on Bond and Boneyard Pub on N Division (both from within a mile of the house we rented for five days/VRBO). Interesting menus and decent beers.

We did not taste anything at Monkless brewery (sadly, not a brewpub...now, at any rate) but I might insist next time we're in Bend as they do a variety of Belgians. Every other place in Bend and Oregon seems IPA-focused.

Short sprint on COCC (Central OR Community College) campus, approx 2.4 km straight line (skipped controls 5-6 and went straight from 4-7 on the longer course. 1:5000, 5m

70s at start with mostly sunny skies. It was warm but not as hot as it could have been. We wondered about some of the mapping of cliffs and earth banks as they seemed to be passable in places not marked as such. Also, there was at least one underpass not mapped as such.

Lost a bit of time at the last control by taking the right fork of the trail and then heading right instead of left, but not more than 30 sec or so (tho that's a lot in a sprint). Had to walk the hills.

Orienteering race 37:07 intensity: (23 @0) + (3 @1) + (6 @2) + (4:13 @3) + (19:06 @4) + (13:16 @5) ** 3.28 km (11:18 / km) +80m 10:05 / km

Sprint at Shevlin Park, just a couple miles west of COCC in Bend (one course), 2.8 km. Same scale as the morning's sprint.

Started 30 sec ahead of Nancy and was confused by trail right out of the start because there were other unmapped use trails, so she caught up just as I found the part that headed up the hill.

Saw folks ahead of me going into all the controls, so no difficulty finding anything.

Nice way to end Deschutes Daze 2019, though I think I got more sun today than others (despite using sunscreen).
