Note

On the drive home from Ottawa, the temp rose from ~48 to as high as 79 before settling back into the low 60s. Sure seemed like Thanksgiving weather in Ottawa. ;-)
10 AM

Orienteering race 21:58 intensity: (13 @1) + (18 @2) + (1:43 @3) + (14:57 @4) + (4:47 @5) ** 2.58 km (8:32 / km) +23m 8:10 / km
ahr:145 max:161 spiked:12/13c shoes: 2015 Altra LP2.0-9 lime

(Slight edits) Ontario Champs sprint at Parc Mousette & Communantaire Tétreau in Gatineau, across the river from Ottawa, near Bates Island. Course 4, 2.2 km with negligible (15m) climb. (1:4000/2.5m map)

Temp was again in the upper 40s, with a breeze.

One minor error (#5) where I was standing right next to a flag but didn't see it until someone punched there. Described as SW inside corner of building and ticket, but I didn't notice the tiny hedge at first. Might have lost a few seconds taking the R route to 4 instead of L. Everything else was straightforward.

As fast as I can go these days; it was good enough for 3rd place in F65 (behind Janet F and Linda Connell), and another OFest glass prize.

To today's start, up a ski trail. Temps were just a tad warmer (a degree or two or three) than yesterday, but still no sun.

Then I had 15 minutes or so to wait before my start.

Long, course 6, back at Ski Vorlage; 5.1 km, 265m climb
1:10000 map today. I missed the 1:7500 we had yesterday...we stayed in the same area.

Chasing start based on yesterday's times, for the most part. I started seconds ahead of a young F-18 who disappeared quickly. Saw her headed to 10 when I was on my way from 7-8.

Found them all where I expected to, but routes to the control weren't always the most efficient, so I'm deducting them from the "spike" count. Inefficient routes to 5, 6, 7, 10, and 13 cost me some minutes, I'm sure. Surprised when I finished to see Linda had MP'd (Janet F said Linda didn't punch the Go control...bummer). She was clearly fastest in our age group. I don't know if she was chasing Lindsey or not. So I ended up 2nd in the age group for the two-day combined time and won an Ottawa O-Fest glass with etched logo. With Linda and some others in our age group having trouble today, Sue H-T was third! :-)

Not sure how my legs will be for tomorrow's sprint, but no matter...it's good training.

Middle course 6 at Ski Vorlage in the Gatineau Park area north of Ottawa, part of the Ottawa O Champs. Cool and cloudy with occasional light drizzle, upper 40s. Course was 3.4 km, 120m climb...same course as for F45 and F55, as well as F21S.

For the OOCup, Janet Findlay was first (Ramblers club), but Linda Kohn was just over an hour for F65; I was third, almost 10 minutes behind Janet F.

Left 6 on the wrong angle and though I tried to read trails there were a lot of other people around and I was distracted. Relocated from the top of a ski lift.

11-12, I saw what I thought was one of the boulders along the way, but lost confidence. Relocated off a dot knoll. The boulder was covered in moss in dark pine forest, but once I got close lots of others were headed there too.

Tomorrow's long here will be a brutal 5.1 km, 265m climb. Ugh. Not sure if I'll be able to move on Monday for the sprint. ;-)

Walking 2:33:24 [1] 3.12 mi (49:10 / mi) +13m 48:34 / mi

From Museum of Fine Arts in Quebec to our hotel by way of the Parliament building and the Ursuline Museum (where I didn't turn my watch off).

We had lunch in the museum's cafe, saw some of the old prison cells (that section of the Museum, the Charles Baillairge Pavilion, was in what was originally built as a territory prison) and an exhibit of the art of Jean Paul Lemieux; and in the Pierre Lassonde Pavilion, a newer building, viewed the Terrace, Inuit sculpture, and Decorative Art and Design exhibits.

The Ursuline Museum had a room with intricate embroideries using metallic threads, largely for religious purposes (altar cloths or vestments), along with details of materials used including paper patterns that were transferred to cloth. Another part of the Museum showed artifacts from the boarding school run by the nuns. I don't think there's a boarding school now as most of the nuns are over age 70 and there are no novices to carry it on, though there appears to be a day care and/or elementary school on the premises. The Ursuline Convent and school was established in the 1600s to educate the girls in the area.

Note

Tonight's group meal was at Bistro Tournebroche which is a farm-to-table establishment which has rooftop gardens and beehives (in the warmer months). Cauliflower and leek soup, or a pate for appetizer, then a choice of beef shepherds pie, seafood chowder, or chicken something; and a creamy, tasty parfait dessert made with sweet stuff.

Walking 18:51 [1] 0.48 mi (39:18 / mi)

After a tour of the Governor Generale's residence, we walked from the Citadel to lunch at a restaurant (Aux Anciens Canadiens) located in the oldest house in Quebec. We had a terrine made from wild pheasant and red deer on a kind of cracker for appetizer, then a choice of a Quebec meat pie, wild animal meat pie, chicken fricassee, or minced salmon in pastry wth a lobster sauce. Dessert was a slice of wonderful maple syrup pie!

12 PM

Walking 56:40 [1] 1.12 mi (50:36 / mi) +25m 47:22 / mi

From lunch to the Norte Dame Basilica, and thence to the Quebec museum of civilization. Forgot to start watch when we left the Museum until we were most of the way back up the hill.
4 PM

Walking 28:07 [1] 0.64 mi (43:56 / mi) +23m 39:31 / mi

From partway back up the hill to the hotel taking a roundabout way. We ate dinner at the Casse-Crêpe Breton restaurant around the corner from the hotel.
