Orienteering race 1:39:00 [4] *** 7.29 km (13:35 / km) +127m 12:29 / km
spiked:13/13c slept:6.5 shoes: Inov8 ORoc280-A 2013-08

Red course (F21 class) for EMPO club championships. Janet Findlay and I decided we'd compete on the 6 km red course against each other. She was faster overall, beating me about 10 minutes. Most of that difference is fitness (and yes, I mean weight, but also training background as I've had a low volume year) and natural speed. She doubted herself on number 10 (see next paragraph) but I've been on the map enough and especially that part to know I was in the right place.

I had no trouble finding any of the features; some of the flags seemed unnecessarily hidden by trees or downfall but I didn't lose much time there. A bit of a mix up meant the numbers on the loose control descriptions didn't match those on the map for a couple of points (10, 11) but the map matched the ones in the woods. Janet was faster on all but a couple of controls. She found point #1, not far from a park road, in less time than it took me to jog down the road to the attackpoint.

There aren't many EMPO members and competition on most courses is fairly thin most years.

It was really nice to see and talk to Francis F, and Vlad and Lina G, who drove down from Quebec. Lovely day in the woods; mid 60s and sunny. The lake levels were low; not surprising as we didn't have a whole lot of rain this summer.

6 minutes

Walked to the mailbox and back, only realizing when I get there why there was no mail. This was after conversation earlier this morning about the USPS holiday....

Same route as Tuesday. A few degrees cooler and I did wear an extra shirt but I guess I was hustling to keep warm.

Interesting to see if AP normalizes the climb. Watch said 49m Tuesday and 35m today.

From home, after coffee, groceries, and voting.

We don't get the "I voted" stickers in my area. I was number 543 at this polling location (had to wait behind two or three folks including one fellow who needed extra assistance/a new ballot); 528th accepted ballot. I think I/we're usually in the low hundreds, so this race is really bringing folks out.

Exerc. Class 50:00 [1]
slept:7.0

5-5-5 in Chatham.

New exercise thrown into this new 6-week session is calf raises. I like the fact though she's been teaching for 30 years(?) she's not afraid to try something new. [After a Pilates instructor joined her to round out the week she added a few more ab exercises into her rotation.] Still not enough balance or inner thigh stuff but I do them on my own or in addition.

Note

AOWN: Besides the three bucks and a doe in the yard, near sunset this afternoon (along wth dozens of robins), I saw a bald eagle cruising over the Kinderhook Creek today in my drive home from the exercise studio.
