Brown X course, which we shared with the younger men; nominally 3.9 km 130m climb

First 5 (to me) were navigationally easy, maybe too much so for Brown? [Though I did get off line a bit to 1 and took a wider route than maybe necessary to 5.]

Maybe not the cleanest route to 6 (went through more barberry than I probably needed to and probably could have shot straight across the marsh), but then messed up in the circle when I didn't see the flag on the boulder/rock where I expected it to be, then didn't look closely at the control description until after checking other rocky bits close by. I eventually returned to that rocky area, thinking it had to be there, and found the flag tucked down in and partly hidden by an unmapped tree. I heard from others that if you approached it from above the flag was readily visible but from other approaches it was definitely hidden from view. I lost a few minutes there but not as much as some.

On 8 I think the choices were to run on a big trail that took you somewhat wide around a hill, and necessitated a climb at the end, or climb a couple of contours or less to a smaller, more direct trail through the hashed green which came out directly across from the mowed trail through the tall grass (rough open). I chose the second option which was slightly more direct.

Gorgeous weather, low 70s and sunny. Hope it hangs around for tomorrow morning.

Note

It was really nice to stop and chat and catch up with others we hadn't seen for awhile. More to come next weekend, I'm sure.

It took a bit longer than we expected to check everyone in for the AGM. Then we waited while the meeting started and then votes were cast for the BOD. When it came time to count them, Kissy and J-J provided assistance and backup; that took a large part of an hour). Then we reported back to the AGM on the results of the counting, where there was a tie for fourth place. The options were to have another ballot as tie breaker (4th place won a 3-year term and 5th got two years) but the two involved candidates amicably resolved the situation without a revote.

I suspect they've been reported elsewhere already and I'll probably be posting something on OUSA soon, but top 5 (in number of votes) were:

Boris
Alex
Barb
tie--Pat M and Ian S

Thanks to J-J and Kris for helping with the vote count (and crowd control on checkin). Thanks also to Donna for her 5 years as OUSA secretary; she's been a pleasure to work with. Special thanks to Peter Goodwin as president who took a job not everyone wants to do and did his best at it. Best of luck on your remaining two years on the board.

It'll be different but good to work with Kris (new OUSA prez) and Barb (sec'y) in the upcoming years.

Exerc. Class 50:00 [1]

Felt a little stiff from the weekend's training (weekend warrior here), and my right knee is still a bit tender, but not like it was last spring. Icing it on Monday helped, and I should have kept that up (I'll try to remember to do so after the US Champs weekend).

In other news, NAOC Bulletin 2 is posted on the NAOC website.

Walking (paved roads) 30:45 [3] 2.0 mi (15:22 / mi) +24m 14:49 / mi
shoes: Sauc.Shad-6000#8-2014H

Needed to get out in the beautiful weather (low 70s, sunny and crisp) and away from my computer. Standard two mile out and back. (My 2-mi choices are this one, one with a flatter overall profile, and one with a relatively steep, though short, start.)

Debut of Simsbury Town Forest map by Grorge W; meet administered by him and Lyn. Turned out to be a very nice day after downpours this morning (per reports and as evidenced by puddles), 70s and less humid after the front passed through.

Green course was advertised as 4.7 km and map looked fairly flat with sandy trails so I did that. Basically same first 10 controls as Red then two more (Red had an extra loop after #10) on the way back in. Some vague terrain out there but good practice for vague areas. I was a bit off line to #7 but corrected when I saw Susie coming in from the trail I planned to relocate from. I was trying to key off a shallow hill shown on the map but it really wasn't obvious. I would have used the backyards instead but didn't want to get too close to the houses, and anyway (again) it was good practice on navigating in vague areas.

A good map for WCOC to have scoreOs for beginners on. Lots of trails to run on; hard to get too lost, and enough features to make it interesting. ;-)
