Event: WCOC Hurd SP

11 AM

Orienteering race (Brown/Orange course) 1:09:07 [3] *** 4.72 km (14:38 / km) +137m 12:47 / km
ahr:120 max:147 spiked:5/7c slept:6.0 shoes: Inov8 ORoc280-A 2013-08

Hurd SP in CT, nominally 3.8 km

Didn't want a long course after the trail run yesterday, and that was the right choice as I mostly walked after 4. Mistakes to 5 (hit stream and turned the wrong way before correcting off the trail) and 7 (where I wandered into the olive-green-with-no-features area before realizing I was too close to a house and figured out the stone wall I saw extended into the mapped part of the map. :-)).

Nice day in the woods, a bit on the warm side (upper 70s, 83 when we left) but that's to be expected for mid-June!
1 PM

Orienteering (White control pickup) 28:38 [1] *** 1.7 mi (16:51 / mi)
spiked:9/9c shoes: Inov8 ORoc280-A 2013-08

Split on the first one is way short because Lyn had collected it and was holding it near the start. Then I went to the car to refill my water bottle before heading out for the rest. Punched at the others before untying them; I wanted my total time because I forgot to start my watch. :-)

EGYMCA 5km trail run in the town park 10:00 am -- registered
https://runsignup.com/Race/NY/EastGreenbush/Greenb...
9 AM

Running (dirt) warm up/down (trail) 7:10 [3] 0.89 km (8:05 / km) +4m 7:54 / km
ahr:142 max:154 shoes: Trail NB 704 8.5D

Jogging around trails near start/finish of the Y's 5K Flag Day race. Saw a couple of course marshalls already in place to direct us...they were well staffed.

Temps were around 68-70 during the warmup, rising into the 70s by race end. Very nice conditions for running which was mostly in the woods. Glad there was no leftover rain after last night's T-storm!
10 AM

Running (dirt) race (trails and parking lot) 44:45 [4] 4.94 km (9:03 / km) +143m 7:55 / km
ahr:157 max:171 shoes: Trail NB 704 8.5D

Trail race with 50-60 others, many dressed for the occasion (there was a trio of young women with tutus, and an ex-serviceman carrying a standard size US flag on a pole, among others. I wore my OUSA shirt [team supporter 2012, so not the current version]).

Some roots, mud from last nights T'storm, and some killer hills which I walked...both times, because the park was small enough that we got to go around twice. There were some nice downhills to go with the ups and I made use of them to catch up to the 52-year-old in front of me near the end of the first loop.

As we approached the start of the second loop, the winner crossed the finish line, and the other woman, whose teen son was also running, slowed down to see if she could see him finish; she said he usually laps her. Turns out he finished third male overall. So I got ahead there and stayed ahead, but she was closing at the end.

My total was a bit more than twice the winner's time, about where I usually am. Only two women over 60, and I was first so got a medal (woohoo). The only class with more than four competitors was the female 20-29 group. Top three women placed 4-5-6 overall, and the 2nd girl was a tiny 11-year-old! Respect. (Her 8-yr-old sister finished 14th; I was about 34th.)

Felt good about getting through it running where there weren't uphills, and with no noticeable aches afterwards (just tired muscles). Track later.

11 AM

Walking warm up/down (dirt trails) 44:00 [1] 2.63 km (16:42 / km) +79m 14:32 / km
ahr:115 max:137 shoes: Trail NB 704 8.5D

With Glen, after eating hamburger, chips, and cake provided for all runners and family, once around the loop or most of it.

Note

Went to Fleet Feet to look at ankle braces, but all they had were compression sleeve-type things, nothing with any structural support.

I did however try on and purchase a pair of Altra trail shoes and will test them out at the Y. All of my current trail shoes are old with either torn uppers or compressed midsoles.

Note

Glen discovered this brewpub listing.... I thnk if we lived closer we'd be there often. May have to try them (at least once) between the EMPO and UNO events this fall.
10 AM

Pilates class (weights) 55:00 [1]

Mostly body weight, with some one-arm flys and triceps at the end. Rt shoulder still isn't right (as converse as that sounds).
11 AM

Walking (indoor track) 18:11 intensity: (3:32 @1) + (14:39 @3) 1.2 mi (15:09 / mi)
shoes: Sauc.Shad-6000#8-2014H

Talked with a Pilates classmate after class (who I also know from my quilt guild) more than usual, so only did a mile but tried to push the cadence a bit.

Leg presses and some RDLs afterwards.

Exerc. Class 55:00 [1]

Left hamstring/glute continues to be sore. Grrr. Mostly aerobics with just a little bit of stepping.
4 PM

Walk/Jog (paved) 46:10 [3] 4.81 km (9:36 / km) +45m 9:10 / km
shoes: Sauc.Shad.6000#7-2012H

Walked around the local balloon loop with a brief stop at the Post Office to mail a card before the box was emptied...I got there just as the Postal Service employee arrived to collect outgoing mail. Some jogging spurts thrown in since I'm supposedly "racing" this weekend. Out of shape, and got an unusual niggling pain in the *right* ankle (which isn't the damaged one). Funny how I had a slower per-k time than my walk earlier in the week (HRM test) where I didn't do any jogging.

Temp about 78 and mostly sunny but there was a lot of shade on most roads.

Note

Something about "2.5 km, 150m climb" doesn't say Brown course to me. Six percent climb...really?

And I think 8km for the Brown Ultralong is longer than the first Green course Ultralong I did (7 km). Granted, Idaho terrain is largely open, but iirc it's rocky underfoot in many places. I'm taking my Camelbak. And several Gus.

10 AM

Pilates class (big bouncy balls) 55:00 [1]

Before class I did 18 Romanian dead lifts with a 24# bar (I think...label worn off), as my left hamstring has been sore and achy. 12 more after class. Doing these helped last time I had a flare-up which is what I think this is. (Injured during a snowshoe race several years ago.)

Big bouncy balls used for a lot of things, including hamstring curls from shoulder bridge, which made me very happy I had stretched them out before class with the RDLs. :-)
11 AM

Walking (indoor track) 33:26 intensity: (3:34 @1) + (29:52 @3)
shoes: Sauc.Shad-6000#8-2014H

14:52 / 15:00 / 3:34
Listening to an Ask Me Another podcast. :-)

Adductors and a few pulldowns after. Back of shoulder/deltoid has been acting up when I do these (which are my shoulder therapy! and usually make my shoulder area muscles feel better) so I only did five. I may have to lower the weight a bit until it's better.
