Beautiful day for a run in Harriman. I ran the Lowlander (last two O loops of the Highlander, this year), estimated around 14.4 km based on aid station info. It was sunny and ~50 or so when we started, warming up to maybe mid 50s in the afternoon. Thanks to Paul, Daniel, HVO and all other volunteers!

Highlander started at 9 after a walk from parking. Lowlander started at the parking lot at 9:30. I was among the last to the 1st LL control which was #8 on the HH (it was ~12 contours up from the start around a hilll), but picked it up from there. With Donna and Steve for the first 4 controls. Too high on #10 (3rd control) but Lori Huberman spotted it down a contour or so. Saw George Hawes and Bill Shannon coming back to that one--they overshot it.

Led D, S, & L to #12, a little dot rocky "dot knoll" on a broad hilltop. Ahead of the crowd through the next 3 short legs (including 1st aid station, where I didn't stop because I had a pack with 2 Camelbak bladders, one Vitalyte, one water). Attacked 16 from near the long cliff to the SE and punched... and heard footsteps just behind me. Thierry Georgieu (eventual winner of the Highlander at around 2 hours 43 min!) quickly punched and took off and was soon out of sight!

Through the 2nd aid station/map exchange/parking lot at about 1 hour 40 min., then off to the Silvermine map. Took a line too low to #20 and was caught in the laurel for a bit but recovered. Then decided to take a mental break by descending to the road and running that around the hills to the AT which brought me within 360 m (20-21 was just over 1.5 km). I don't think it took any longer except I didn't find the trail junction marked as distinct on this old map and went an extra 100 m out and back before correcting. George & Bill were punching at 21 when I got there.

Paralleled them on the leg to 22 but I got too high (I scared a sunbathing black snake on the way -- it must have been over a yard long but it quickly moved away from me) so they (there was a group with them too) punched ahead of me. Navigated on my own to 23 and saw them on the way to the next control as I approached. Never saw them again until after I finished.

Third female finisher on Lowlander course, a ways behind Kat and less than 10 min behind Lori H. 16th overall out of ~33 starters (28 finishers/5 DNFs when I left). I think Sergei Zhyk finished 1st. Some faster female starters DNF'd.

Garmin TC shows 18.2 km covered (SportTracks was confused with the lost satellite reception after control 21 and registered 29 km! -- I don't think so).

Pilates class 55:00 [1]

At the Y, using exercise balls. Did some exercises without, including side leg lifts (some of the balls are inflated extra big, and if you don't get to class early enough to get a small one, you're out of luck). Went easy on the weights (upper back, mostly) because I've done weights the past three days too.

Next two days are rest days -- Lowlander on Sunday!

In Chatham. Typical routine; no surpirses. Nothing much new except for the little pecan tarts someone brought in (forgot to bring an extra home for G -- sorry!).

At the Y; mostly core plus some light weights for back and shoulders.

Since it had been awhile I thought I'd try the elliptical again. Had to keep adjusting the crossramp and incline so that my knees didn't complain. Think I'll go back to the treadmill next time.

Note

Forgot to add our AOWN exprerience from yesterday. On our ride to the Sargent Center from Peterborough, driving up Windy row, a bobcat crossed the road (west to east); it was a bit south of the start and road-crossing areas.

This is the second bobcat I've seen this year -- the first was in our back yard (field)!

In Chatham. I'm surprised my muscles weren't more tight, like usual on Mondays after orienteering, especially with all the trail running yesterday, but everything felt good (minor knee tweaks notwithstanding).
