7 AM

Note

Woke up early and was able to talk to Roger before heading down to breakfast around 6:15, where I had a waffle for Roger. Then off to the park for a 7 AM arrival.

Unloaded and started setting up the computers, and getting SI-cards to the vetters checking controls, etc. Things were a little crazy at first since it was immediately reported that two controls had been stolen. One would be found later in a nearby stream.

Nice large shelter, so we had plenty of room to set download up on the backside of where the screens were. This was a nice buffer zone.

Actually hanging the screens took longer then anticipated, and it was after 9 before everything was ready. I left Max to sort out how to view the start times for each class, and headed to the start. It was further away than I had imagined it to be and lots of uphill as well. After catching my breath, Tom was able to slot me in at 9:43, a later start then I had anticipated at the beginning of the day, so the pressure was on to have a good run and get back to relieve Sandy.

Linda C. from PTOC was assigned to the Results/Download area, and it was very handy to have an extra set of hands to get the many little tasks done. She also did the bulk of the downloading freeing up Sandy and I for the troubleshooting side of things.
10 AM

Orienteering race (ISIC A-Meet - Green Y) 1:14:59 [4] *** 5.4 km (13:53 / km) +150m 12:12 / km
shoes: Pink!! Ice Bugs

Garmin = 4.26 miles with 157 m climb

I wasn't sure how the two week exercise break would affect me, and I was a little pooped getting to the start, but once the whistle blew, my competitive spirit kicked in, and it was off to the races.
1 PM

Note

The rain held off until just the last part of the day, and just before 2 PM, the last finishers checked in. Yeah! I like when everyone is accounted for so easily.

Linda got lunch for the Results crew which was much appreciated.

After going back to the hotel and getting some of the results up on the internet and a shower, it was off to Dick and Nancy's for a fine dinner with Sandy and Sharon C.

Back to the hotel by 8 PM, and tried to get some sleep.

Note

Slept horribly last night, aided by strange bed and noisy neighbors.

Sandy and I spent the bulk of morning and part of the afternoon at the event site to get a plan in place on setting up the screens for the projectors for the results display.

The white flannel panels I brought with me were too porous for use outside, even under the shelter. So, it was off to Lowe's to figure out an alternative. After looking at drop cloths, tarps, and shower curtains, Sandy got us over to the window shade area, and with the help of the service manager, we settled on three beige shades that were full blackout. Picked up some clamps and string and headed back to the park. A test run showed that these would work as long as they were weighted down at the bottom, so we solicited Mary for some 5 gallon buckets for tomorrow.

Back to the hotel for a rest and then off to the model.
5 PM

Orienteering race (Model event) 37:58 [3] *** 2.4 km (15:49 / km) +106m 12:57 / km
shoes: Red Fish

Garmin = 1.93 miles with 106 m climb

Not sure how much I would get out this weekend, so I ran the model event like a race. Fun sprint like course with 12 controls. Wish I had worn leg coverings, but otherwise, lots of fun!

Running warm up/down 6:34 [1] 0.5 mi (13:08 / mi) +5m 12:44 / mi
shoes: Red Fish

Jogged around in the sloppiness with Sandy to cool down (for me), while Sandy stretched her legs some since she had walked just a portion of the model.

Note

A planned day off work which I spent rearranging stuff in my two suitcases and two carry on bags. About 180 pounds of stuff to get to the airport. Taking the show on the road via plane is hard!

After a bit of debate, Roger drove me to the airport, and Sandy met me there. She waited outside of security so that she could give me a hand getting my bags checked, etc.

Then off to the gate. Plane left a little late, which did not help my greater than usual uneasiness about flying. But, everything went well, and I was happy to be in Kansas, in place for the weekend's event.

Had dinner and stopped by Dick's to pick up the three new projector's that I had shipped there.

Off to the hotel after that.

Note

A huge snowstorm was predicted for the WDC area today. The federal government and all area schools were closed.

Perfect timing - between naps, I used the entire day to pack for the trip to Kansas tomorrow.

And after the massive snow had stopped falling, I measured the how much there was on the back deck. I didn't need to medal in the Long - the Short was more than enough.

EX2 Spring Backyard Burn 1 - Hemlock

Race timing. Intended to try to run beforehand, but I just didn't feel like it.
