PNWOF Manito Park sprint, long advanced

Really nice park, had a good time. Knew it was going to be too long to feel like a sprint but still started too fast. Really just sort of plodded the last half. Fun outing, and the kids all had a good time on the playground(s), too.

PNWOF Saltese Uplands, short advanced

I had heard in advance about some controls of dubious placement, and John Harbuck gave me some information about the source of the map itself, and my legs were already pretty trashed before I started, and I knew there were steep hills and lots of them... so my attitude was that I was out for a calorie-burning orienteering stroll. And that was fine. I found that the map was okay to navigate on (plenty of things to improve, but it helps to have the right level of expectation, too), and the middle/flatter part of the course even allowed for some jogging and approaching the controls with a bit of speed.

Pretty place, though I don't feel any strong desire to return for more orienteering there.

Playing orienteering in Montana. Lubrecht middle NRE and day 1 of the Western States Champs, obviously the most important event in the competitive calendar for anyone residing in a western state.

Very nice forest and really fun terrain, especially the beginning of the course, which went quite well for me. It was control-picky and, though I am unable to move my slightly excessive bodily mass as fast as I would like to, I was able to run a fair bit. That held up basically through control 7, and then I made all of the different flavors* of orienteering mistake consecutively on a single leg, losing about 7 minutes on control 8. Back to competent (if not fast) orienteering for the 9-12 to finish up the course.

*Flavors in the mix: poor route choice; failure to pick an attackpoint; parallel error; ignoring alarm bells; failure to bail once it was clear I didn't know where the fuck I was. I guess it was nice to cram them all into one leg so that I could say that I enjoyed most of the legs on the course.

Running (road) 20:03 intensity: (22 @0) + (29 @1) + (7:31 @2) + (11:41 @3) 2.97 km (6:45 / km)
ahr:146 max:159 shoes: New Balance 880v10

Quick (as in short, not as in fast) neighborhood morningjog. Legs felt about as unperky as is possible. Had to sneak in a short thing before heading down to Patagonia for the day, where much time was spent playing in the pool with Lukas.
