Orienteering long 1:17:42 intensity: (30:00 @2) + (47:42 @3) *** 12.0 km (6:29 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 X Talons

Ran Magnus's course after realizing M21E would involve some 18 km's of mostly trail running. M35 was just right. Now I can appreciate what the boys will be running tomorrow. Could be really tricky when the pack decides to hit any of the green stuff... it will be easy to get tripped up or loose your direction. With so many trails about I imagine the pace is going to be dangerously fast, especially in and out of the controls.

Time to rest up for O-Ringen.

Rough first half then smartened up and finished strong. Fastest NA time despite problems must have been a bad day for everyone. Just made the top half. Aiming a lot higher for tomorrow. Results

Orienteering (Middle) 48:43 [3] **** 4.9 km (9:57 / km) +180m 8:24 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Oroc

Pre-race went great. At the start I felt completely prepared. When I flipped over the map and was confronted with the first leg I was relieved. I immediately knew what I needed to do. Then as I was following my compass down the line I hit an unmarked cut line in the direction of my control. This by itself shouldn't have been a problem but I was simultaneously fighting the forces of the two other guys who had started with me. Eventually the cut line ended at a reentrant that I had a hunch was the direction I needed to go. But my confidence had been shattered and I failed to diverge. The guy I was with found his control and I was left in the dust to relocate. After a minute I knew my race was toast and reset. Found my control right away and cranked the pace up again.

I ran as best I could, unfortunately today that wasn't very good. I wasn't ready to run a PB but tried anyway on the chance I could keep it together. If I was running any other race I would have slowed down and focused on keeping it together. But my plan was to go for it and so I was forced to redline and unsurprisingly lost it. After a string of mindless errors I slowed down and ran a clean race into the finish.

I know how to have an amazing race. At this level every little detail counts and there were a few details I missed. The Middle Quali is done but my races are far from over.

Ran the coaches race after the JWOC relay. Bit of a cross country run. Happy with how the legs handled the climb.
