WMOC long A final - 30th
Just ran out of juice a bit for this one. Both in the legs and mentally. I wasn’t quite as well suited to the area with a bit more vegetation and even though it wasn’t that heavy I found it hard going at times to keep up a decent pace.
Technically I wasn’t as diligent about picking out clear features and it showed up in wobbles on most controls plus a couple of proper mistakes needing relocation. Each time I was on a good line but not with enough precision or confidence.
All in all a good 7-8 mins off what I might have been able to do feeling fresh.
About +35% on the winner

WMOC middle A final - 24th
Very pleased with this run. Having been safe in the qualifying I wanted to push on a bit in an area that I knew suited me. 24th was a decent improvement on my qualifying position (around 40th). The area was harder technically and a bit more up and down than most of the qualifying.
I was on the edge most of the time as a result of pushing the pace. As a result there were a couple of wobbles: on the way to #14 I drifted and almost crossed a ride well to the right of the line. I corrected it into a half-decent route but only nervously. Plus a few cases where I was hoping rather than expecting to see the feature/control.
Had some good head to head racing with Jaroslav Tomes towards the end who I'd caught by 4 mins.
About +26% on the winner (who was not Osterbo)

WMOC forest qual
Mostly good but towards the end when I got tired I was a bit too lazy with some routes. But sorted out my 2-3 problems pretty quickly.

Easy jog around the model map - varnukrogs
This was like the orienteering equivalent of skiing in backcountry fresh powder snow. Just great.
Only one problem control when I tried to go too straight through some vague contour detail, went back and did it again fine by veering 25m off to the right to be on the well defined ridge.

WMOC sprint final - 26th
Really enjoyed the sense of occasion and had a good if not quite perfect run. Just missed #11 by being a bit too risky/aggressive coming off the hill, having been more careful on the way up.
Slightly anticlimactic feel about it though as (a) I got held up by the closed gate (that was supposed to be open as mapped) and also (b) they then voided the whole results more or less. I don’t really understand it. It was only one leg that needed to be voided and I don’t see that anyone has gained by voiding entire courses instead. Apparently that’s The Rules in which case I feel a bit sorry for the organisers having to apply such a lousy mean spirited rule.

Edit: on reflection I probably lost out more than I thought from the closed gate. I hadn't realised the alleyway was the controversial one from WOC '18 and suspect a few of the 25 people above me will have chosen the other route.

WMOC sprint qualifier - 10th
Good solid run without any real risks. Had a couple of small hesitations and think I missed at least one better route, but nothing dramatic.
Into the A final with a minute and a half to spare which I’m pleased with.
Oystein Kvaal Osterbo ran 13 plus change in the other heat, 3 mins down on him definitely a good result.
