Gunstock, Red, 6.4 km, 9th.
I set up the results computer, and things appeared to be all in order with Pete ready to take over the duties of entering the participants' data, so he and Lex encouraged me to go out early. Things started out pretty smoothly, and I caught Dean R just before #2. He went off in the wrong direction after that, and I got ahead. Approaching #6, the mosquitoes got really bad, and I considered quitting, but then it started to rain (and at times it was raining pretty hard). That was good as far as the bug situation, but not good for my glasses, which need another coat of Rain-X, and they were fogged up pretty badly for the rest of the course. I spiked the feature on #7, but failed to see the control (GPS shows me within 3 meters), so I went for a five-minute wander, during which time Dean and Kristin caught up. Never saw Dean again after that, but Kristin and I were together off and on (sometimes on different route choices) through #15. My route choice on #16 may not have been so great, and I also screwed up the attack, mistaking a small trail on the map for an intermittent stream, and wasting a few minutes. The rest was fine except that on the way to the finish I popped out of the woods onto a trail and the place where my foot came down was not solid footing and I crashed pretty hard. At least I didn't turn an ankle, but I did limp the rest of the way in. The sun came out shortly before I finished, and the rest of the day was nice. Almost DFL today.

Keyes-Parker with Nancy. Nice little park, very clean wods, though quite a bit of poison ivy in the open areas.

My left foot is very not happy right now. Iced it for quite a while tonight.

With Nancy in Ashby after trivia, In The Dim.

40 years ago today, my friend Mike and I set out from Ossining NY on recumbent bicycles that we had literally just finished building. We both had to switch to conventional bikes after about a week (for different reasons), but in early August we made it to San Francisco. It was my first time outside of the eastern time zone.

Table Rock, with Nancy. Included a nice section of trail that I had not been on by mountain bike (and that wouldn't be that well suited for it). No bugs to speak of, and the mountain laurel looks like it's on the verge of being spectacular. It's possible that this area has potential, I need to think about it.

Fort Rock, Red, 6.0 km, 95 m, 4th.

You know it's a tough course when a pathetic performance like this is good enough for 4th place. A lot of people had a rough time out there.

After working the results computer through the normal registration window (so that nominally it should have bn able to just run on its own with people coming to download, except I had made a few mistakes that Nancy and Lex were able to fix), the first thing I realized was that I had forgotten to bring O-shoes. I had on lightweight hikers, and they'd just have to do. Not the best in slightly wet conditions, but I managed to not slip and fall.

Off to the right a bit on #1. On #2 I was actually on target, but the slope looked wrong, too flat, so I went downhill a bit, then had the insight to unfold the map and look for a contour interval: 3 m. That explained things.

On #4 I definitely stopped too short, but what I was seeing didn't make sense, and I still can't find the stuff on the map that I was looking at in the terrain. When I finally spotted the control, I really didn't have confidence that it was mine.

The next few went fine, and #8 didn't have any really big problems, though my route wasn't very efficient and there was some hesitation. Same with #9. I'm really not convinced that #10 was on the right boulder, and my exit from #11 was really bad.
