Nothing logged today, though I did mow the north part of the lawn.

Disc golf at Coggshall Park with Stephen. He got a set of discs a while back and has been wanting to play. So I grabbed a couple of random discs that I had laying around the house and met him over there. My best guess is that the last time I played disc golf was in the 1970s. My watch somehow didn't get started at the beginning, so I fudged the stats.

Stephen had asked me to bring paper and pencil to keep score, but I said it's 2023, I'll find a phone app. The first two things that I tried under "golf scorecard" did not do what I wanted: they wanted me to create an account, and then wouldn't let me start unless I specified what golf course I was playing. So then I had the inspiration to look for a "minigolf scorecard" app, and that worked.

A lot of black flies, which upped the frustration factor quite a bit. Stephen is inexperienced, and I'm way out of practice. I shot a little over 100 for a course that was probably about par 55. On the positive side, we managed to not lose any discs (but there was a lot of hunting around in the laurel).

Counterclockwise. I deliberately tried to keep the pace down a bit, and successfully managed to not turn either ankle. The MTB crowd has been out there to clear all the fallen trees that had been blocking the trail, but there are still some mudholes. I also went by a depression that I've rarely if ever seen any water in, and it's now a lake.

I found one crawling tick when I got home, which is a lot better than the 20(!) that Nancy picked up on her hike this morning.

I think I'm the fattest now that I have ever been. I need to stop eating.

pedaling (cross bike) 1:02:57 intensity: (4:10 @1) + (3:38 @2) + (10:06 @3) + (35:43 @4) + (9:20 @5) 23.83 km (2:39 / km) +345m 2:28 / km

The shortest paved loop from the house that circumnavigates this weekend's Billygoat map. This meant some hills, but that's fine, I've got gears to spare. I managed to do pretty much the whole downhill run on Rte 119 from Damon Pond without any cars passing me; the first one was just before I got to Wheeler Rd.

It's a nice time of year in many respects. Temperature is nice, plenty of daylight, and it's not humid yet. And the aromas are great. Aside from the pickup truck that went by reeking of cigar, there was the pungent vinegar smell of some recently cut trees, one spot where I smelled new-mown grass, and somebody was cooking hamburgers. But best of all was going past the many lilacs in bloom -- heavenly.

On my last climb, three motorcycles went by on the other side of the road, going downhill. The riders took their feet off the pegs and mimed pedaling. I suppose they were trying to make fun of me, but I had absolutely no desire to trade places.

Just around the lake, but in the opposite direction from what I usually do.

Note

I had thought about signing up for the Escarpment Trail Run, and looked at the website periodically to see when registration opened. I looked today, and they either updated the qualifying standards or I didn't remember accurately what they were. In any case, I clearly don't meet the criteria that they have listed there now, and I don't see a realistic chance of changing that in time for this year. Maybe in the future.

Note
(rest day)

After a busy weekend, I was tired enough that I had to take a nap mid-afternoon, and opted to not do anything else to wear myself out even more. I'm definitely not as young as I used to be.

Six controls plus a water stop. (I also retrieved another water stop earlier, but that was very close to where I parked my car.)

Note

OK, I know there are a couple of bird aficionados who read this log, so here's a question: what bird that might be found in New Hampshire in May has a song that consists of three "beep" sounds in a row, repeated periodically. The "beep" is pretty much identical to the sound made by an SI box, although the bird is considerably louder.
