Cumbria Cross-Country Champs 2014, Cockermouth. 9.3km.
(Little bit of guess-work at the time, results were not up).
5 laps of almost continuous ups and down. There was ~100m of flat running! Most fellrunner (read: uphill runners who are light) friendly cross-country course I've ever done.
Lots of Border runners on the start line but a few notable absentees (Carl Bell and Steve Heb spectating and me being the only Barrow Strider, other than Anna, in the senior race). Some fellrunner faces in attendance though: Rhys, Phil Winskill, Ben Abdelnoor, Jack Wright and Chris Edis.
Set off in the top 10 without having to go at break-neck pace. Adrian Holliday, Ricky Lightfoot, Alisdair Russell and James Douglas ran away from everyone. Matthew Grieve, Alistair Weymouth, Kev Bell and some older guy in a retro vest were all up ahead as a Border contingent. Rhys and Phil went past me on the first climb of the steep hill, closely followed by John Mason.
I was making myself run at a good effort level because the course was advertised at only 8km. Flew down the steep descent and went past John, Kev and a couple of other guys like they were jogging.
On the second lap I was overtaken by Jack, Ben and a young Border guy, yet again, on the steep climb. Then overtook the Ben and the Border guy on the descent (almost slipping over this time) and gained on Jack as we headed into the 3rd lap.
I thought I'd overtake him pretty swiftly as I went quickly up the harder ground of the farm track and gained a lot. I could tell that Ben and the Border guy were working harder but I ran out of hard ground and those two headed on to reel Jack in. I eventually got past him at the end of the 3rd. Thought I'd be able to overhaul the other two but started to get some gut-rot and did well just to keep up some pace to the end.
Wish I'd been able to go hard on the last lap but didn't really want to shit myself! Finished feeling a bit fresh still. Oh well!
Bit annoyed to get beaten by Ben but: horses for courses.
R) glutes sore afterwards.
