Ian Hodgson Mountain Relays, Leg 4.
Thick drizzle cloudy, cold, windy conditions. The forecast had predicted lots of fog and 30mph winds up top too. Elected to wear my OMM jacket, hat and gloves!
Set off in 4th with Helm Hill 41 seconds in front. Borrowdale and Dark Peak had gone through a few mins before. I was quite excited and pumped up and I knew that Chris and I were both faster than one of the Helm guys, Robin. Had brought the gap down to about 100m when we crossed the footbridge and set off on the climb.
Got past them as we went past the other footbridge. Followed the cobbled path up towards the Dove Crag CP and my glutes were burning on the steep path. I was just hanging on to Chris Robinson (my partner for the 2nd year running) on the steep stuff.
We then set off across the grass towards Hart Crag. Didn't get a good line in the clag and had to cross several rock fields. Got well out of sight of the Helm boys by the summit (but they had suprised me with how slowly we had got away).
Ground it out over Fairfield on the main path with Chris managing to keep pace. Gave a nod to the Daz H's cairn which had a Pennine vest on it.
Hesitated a bit coming off Fairfield and had to veer a fair bit to hit the scree. Got onto Cofa Pike and heard the other Helm guy shouting encouragement to Robin (sounded like they were just hitting the scree).
Painfully slow getting down the rocky path to Deepdale Hause. Chris was pussy-footing.
I got into a good rhythym on the long gradual climb to St Sunday Crag and Chris was dropping off the pace. This reversed entirely once we were descending towards the last CP. Chris was nailing it. I think he's pretty good on gradual grassy descents. I can only go that fast if I'm head to head with someone.
I kept looking back to see no sign of any chasers and just went sensibly. Chris took a couple of tumbles but this didn't seem to change his approach!
Hated the cobbled path from the last CP down to the road. Wet, smooth stone is not fun.
Great to finish in 3rd charging across the field alongside Chris with all of the team there to welcome us in!
Glad to do the job after a hard few w/es of racing and with a headcold. Think we could have been 3 mins faster if we knew the right lines and run another minute off the time if we had been chasing/racing the final descent.
We've come 4th at my other two Hodgsons and I didn't think we had much hope of getting any better after Tom stacked the Vets team (they had a DNF due to John Hooson snapping his ACL on the descent of leg 3, stink!) but Ben Abdelnoor's knowledge of leg 2 in the cloud made a huge difference again (our leg 1 had been significantly slower than expected due to Dan Duxbury being drafted in due to someone's illness, poor Jack "could've read a book" according to Dan!).
£12 Pete Bland voucher immediately spent on new X-Talon 190 (the original red kind, not the new orange version)!
