Note

Tour of the recent fairly extensive clearcut at Tulmeadow farm - roughly 27 acres. Looks really nice, if you are the kind of person who appreciates a clearcut, and it will be interesting to see the young forest develop. I got invited by the forester, my friend Jim Gillespie. Jim spoke, as did the landowner, Don Tuller, and the loggers Carl and Scott. Carl operates one of those high-tech machines that cuts the trees, limbs them up and cuts them to length, all while he operates from inside the cab. Too bad the machine wasn't there too. Bill D was also there, and nice to visit with him a bit. Also Margery Winters, whom I haven't seen in a while. She used to come here as a naturalist when we had field trips for the Canton school kids at our place.

Bethel Schools sprint. Course 1. Caught my foot in a vine while climbing over a guardrail, raking my shin along the edge of the guardrail. Pretty sore, but no permanent damage. Otherwise just really slow. Woods legs were fairly unpleasant. Swung wide around #1 to minimize barberry exposure and had one of those falls where my toe caught the end of a stick driving the other end into the ground and upending my leg. Crashed my shoulder pretty hard. Then leaving #2 and approaching the road had the guardrail crash. So pretty beat up. My persistent lower leg problem didn't throw me off too much, but I certainly had no spunk for running,

Note

Nice visit from our forester, Jim Gillespie. He had retired, took a year off, but decided he missed it so he is back in the forest, although he tries to get others to do the manual work of it. He designed and implemented the 5 acre clear cut we had in around 2005 or 2006, and came today to see how it was doing. He has been working on a cut at the Tuller farm in Simsbury and there will be a demonstration there on Saturday that I will attend.
