DVOA Coventry Woods (Day 2) Brown X

Map and Route.

A much better day for me and first in M75 for the day, 8th on Brown.

1. Stayed on the trail to where there was a somewhat indistinct stream crossing with a flag, and a flag up the hill a bit apparently where the stream left a marshy area. Up to that flag, then on compass to my control. Controls today were generally visible from a bit of a distance if you were facing the right direction, a big advantage for me.
2. On compass, checking off a control on a charcoal platform on the way. Banged right into it.
3. Up to the trail above, then crossed to the next trail, along it for a bit then angled up the hill, trying to make sense of the stony ground patches, seeing a control on a boulder, generally just staying on compass and eventually I could see a bit of reentrant developing and there it was.
4. A little tangled in thorns on the way out, and ended up going E to the trail instead of the NE I was thinking about, but then down the trail and followed it around to attack 4 from the back side. Easy navigation, nice running downhill on the trail.
5. Trail around the rocky reentrant, then on compass from the corner, keeping an eye on the distinctive mapped mountain laurel above me and hitting it right on.
6. Downhill on compass, hit it right on. Didn't notice the 68/89 control code controversy. The way my brain works, if I'm looking for 68 and I see an upside down 68, it still registers as a 68 to me, anyway.
7. Below to the trail, then climbed the hill on it to the corner, crossed to the next trail and downhill, and then on compass from there. Felt a little loose the last 100 yards or so, so definitely looking around left and right, but hit it right on.
8. Hard fall right before the rocky stream bed. Fortunately not in the stream bed, which would have been painful. Anyway, took a while to get up and moving again, so this was the only place AP showed me with lost time.
9. Downhill to the building and then road to the area with the control.
F Felt like I was moving fairly fast, but the time certainly wasn't.

DVOA A-meet Day 1 French Creek North Brown X

Rode down with J-J and Nancy, stopping the night in Basking Ridge and coming the rest of the way this morning.

Map and Route.

1. Feeling pretty stiff. Along the trail, barely keeping ahead of a kid on the white course.
2. And then getting passed by the kid, as I continued to the trail corner, across to the next trail and then on compass, seeing the control from a bit of a distance.
3. For whatever reason, I paid not attention to the substantial rocky ground and green mapped in front of me, and instead of the pleasant option of backing out to the trail, or just going straight north to the E-W trail, I pushed right through the worst of the rock, mostly walking, stumbling but not falling, and generally wondering what the heck I was doing there. Eventually popped out at the trail, and not real problem finding the control, going left of the small rocky ground just SE of the control, but a major time loss. Saw Roger U in the area, but he was going someplace else on Brown Y.
4. More or less on compass, saw another control along the way and went by to look at it, and it registered on my SI so I guess we were doing SI air. Meanwhile, when I was getting to my actual controls I wasn't hearing a beep or (mostly) seeing a flash, so I was a little worried I had a malfunction. Anyway, it all worked out fine. Strange.
5. Long leg, generally just on compass, hoping to find the sharp reentrant on the line 200 M before the control. I didn't, having drifted too high, and once I was on top, I headed down the hill to the NW, past a green patch that seemed about right and down into the correct reentrant. Lucky. Saw Trish Underwood there.
6. On compass, went pretty well, saw the mountain laurel patch and was aware the platform was in or behind the laurel so found it easily enough.
7. Probably should have gone straight, but took the trail uphill almost to the ride, and then on compass. There were a lot of people in the vicinity of the control, including George Walker and Trish again.
8. On compass, feeling a bit loose toward the end, but hit the ditch. Unfortunately, a bit too low so had to climb back up, and there was Trish again.
9. On compass, reading the shape of the hill and feeling pretty confident, ran right to it.
10. Trying to stay above the rocks, and planning to get to the end of the rocky ground and find the boulder at the end of it. A little problem because I got to what I thought was the end of the rocky ground and looked around for a while, before deciding it must be further and there it was another 30 or so meters past where I was looking.
11. Downhill, feeling slow and tentative. J-J came by like a shot (relatively speaking). Ditch was easy to find.
12. Camp road to the flag.
F Unremarkable, not feeling very energetic.
3rd on M-75, 10 seconds behind Dave Cady, 5 seconds behind Bob Bullions.
