Note

A very nice visit with our friends Lina and Angelo. Peter and Gail came down and Gail stayed with Rhonda while Peter and I went to Lina's. There is often quite a large crowd at Lina's for a Sunday lunch, but this was a bit more manageable. Just two of their kids, one spouse and two grandchildren. I hadn't met the grandchildren before - very nice kids, 13-year old twin girls. Lunch was the usual sort of extravaganza. Four kinds of pasta for a first plate, fettucine with herbs, two kinds of homemade gnocchi, one with spinach and one with tomato sauce, another pasta with a different tomato sauce. Then three second plates: chicken, steak and salmon. Try to pace myself. Some very nice salad and vegetables. Fennel (excellent), string beans perfectly fresh. Then came a beautiful fruit plate, strawberries, cherries and golden grapes, and finally two kinds of dessert, some little peach tarts and a wonderful chocolate cake. And of course espresso. A wonderful family and a very nice afternoon. Among other things we heard about the plans Lina and Angelo have to take all four of their grandchildren to Italy for a month this summer. Amazing.

Nice green course by George at Town Forest in Simsbury. Not my best day, though. Woke up today with an inflamed left hip, and aggressive rolling did little to calm it down. By the time I was off in the woods it was sore enough that I just wanted to get back, so mostly walking, getting a lot of sticks in the face.

Map and Route

1. Not much to it, just trail to the hill and climb.
2. Lots of pine saplings in the way, lots of sticks in the face.
3. Kept trying to fight to the trail to the east, kept getting pushed south by vegetation, so a lot of fight. Once I finally got tot he trail it was easy,
4. A little off to the right,r an into the marsh and had to back out.
5. Again trying to fight toward the trail to the east, getting pushed around by sticks in the face. Once I crossed the trail it was easier, although I drifted a bit, but no problem correcting when I finally saw the marsh. Saw Joe near here.
6. I had pretty much had it by here, just struggling, trying to keep going. Saw a flag at the stonewall after I bounced off the marsh. Missed the flag a little high and hunted for it a bit.
7. Really out of it by here, wandered off to the right and then along the marsh.
8. Flag seemed really far down the spur. Map confirms it.
9. Again a hard time getting out to the trail. Along the trail hoping to see the two dot knolls before the control, or the control itself, but no - just bumped into the trail junction and had to come back.
10. Easy, although not moving at all well even downhill on the trail.

5 PM

Note

A lot of rolling today. Finally got some relief this session as the knot in my hip loosened up under sustained pressure.
10 PM

Note

Really vigorous rolling session, finally resolved some knots in the butt. Enough to go to sleep.

Some epic laurel wranglilng. About 2 and a half hours worth, until I had to come in and lie down for a while. Cleared a pretty substantial thicket.

Note

Long travel day, 3 hr drive into NYC for an appointment at noon, 4 hrs back arriving home at 7. Pretty spent. Long distance driving is one of the worst things I can try to do. Especially in stop and go traffic.

Training event at Mt Norwottuck set by Sanjay. The map looked pretty easy, but then in the forest things were much more challenging. Lots of extra bike trails, far more mountain laurel and sticks in the face than the nice white map had led me to believe. Fun course and quite challenging a it turned out. Only one real error, when I headed up the wrong re-entrant on the way to #4, but not a lot of lost time there. Otherwise, finding reasonable routes, not getting tricked by the myriad twisting trails. My back was pretty sore, so not moving all that fast, and particularly not moving all that fast through the thick stuff. A nice outing.

Map and route.
