Uncustomary activity this morning - went golfing with Zack and my neighbor Tom. I used to golf with Tom quite a bit several years back. Zack prefers to get a cart, and there was no way it was going to work for me to carry my bag, so that was pretty satisfactory, stashing it on the cart and walking along. An inauspicious beginning, not making any kind of contact on woods and 11 over on the first 4 holes, but then settled in and was only 3 over on the last 5, parring both the par 3s. Very satisfactory, but plenty sore by the end and no way I would have wanted to play any more.

Subsequent events yesterday left the back quite sore. Splitting and stacking a bunch more of the dead oak Zack has been scavenging, then rototilling the garden and planting a cover crop, and one last hike in to swim with the dog at LM left me very tender. Will try to gentle myself up for some orienteering today.

Green course at Huntington. Nice ride down and back with Bill D. Good navigation up until I got off track on the way to 8 and then just made a hash of it and 9. Very sore back to start out, and tired in the 90 degree heat.

Map and route.

Navigation was fine up through #7, more or less hitting them right on. On the way to #8 I thought I was being careful to avoid getting sucked up the reentrant to the right and when I got to the trail I just couldn't believe I was at that trail. Rookie mistake. Anyway, once I didn't know where I was I made a bunch more errors before (sort of) figuring it out. Then I couldn't seem to keep a straight line going to 9, just kept wandering off. No trouble finding it, just couldn't keep the discipline to keep going in more or less the right direction. Really slow and uncomfortable, though.

Gym 10:00 [1]

4x12 goblet squats; 3x12 bench presses, after getting back from a quick dip at Lake McD with the dog.

With Rhonda at our new favorite place, along the west side of Lake McDonough. The hills are more impressive on the bike than they are walking, that's for sure. This all seemed pleasant and good exercise, so I suspect we will do it some more. Strangely enough, this didn't hurt my back at all, so another good reason to do it.

Note

Zack's alertness cycle has now migrated to where he is pretty ready to go early in the morning. He and Jeff had cut a bunch of wood last night and he wanted to get out and split and stack it this morning, so that is what we did for an hour or so. Then I picked the last of the apples.

From Pleasant Valley, the plan was to go as far as was comfortable, or to the end of Sandy Brook Rd, whichever came first. Things were fine until about the 8.5 mile part when the left QL stiffened up and started aching. Babied it along for another half mile, but it wasn't getting any better so I turned back. The way back is pretty much all gentle downhill, so no additional discomfort.
A bit disappointing, but on the other hand better than the last several times I've tried it.

Two dog loops, lethargic pace, but it would be nice to at least do this more often.

All this talk about Mt Tom has me thinking about walking it for time. Not likely to make a special trip for it, but if I am in the area I'd like to give it a go.
