Easy walk down to the Big Down Marsh with granddaughter Rebekah and our friend Sheryl and her kids. Rebs is here for a few days before getting picked up by her parents this weekend.
6 PM

Note

Took Rebs and Zack to Tulmeadow for ice cream and to watch the cows. Then we walked for a while on the hiking trail that goes through the farm, watching swallows working over the fields for their dinner.

1 PM

Running 32:55 intensity: (8 @0) + (24 @1) + (1:56 @2) + (16:26 @3) + (14:01 @4) 4.12 km (7:59 / km) +155m 6:43 / km

Hot, steamy. Getting more sluggish each time. No movement in the legs. I guess it will be a long way back, if at all.

Supposed to be two dog loops, but got stopped for a few minutes to answer a phone call when I came by the first time.

The second one. Sluggish. Hot day, but I doubt that is it. More just the general state of my conditioning now.

With Rhonda from W Simsbury. Saw our friend Drew Stone twice, once at the parking lot we use in WS and once out on the road. Included a sidetrip to check out the Garlic Farm, but otherwise the usual loop we do when we go over that way, more or less.

ahr:86 max:108

Went to the right instead of the left at Stanclift cove, different sort of trip, paddling along the shore in the less traveled parts, followed a blue heron for a while as he navigated a marshy area and took a couple of short flights. Watched an osprey swoop down twice and skim the water with his feet. Saw three painted turtles in formation on a log at the water's edge. Several apparent muskrat holes at the water line. Very pleasant. Hot. A little more shade would have been good.

PT exercises 45:00 [3]

Full set of the back exercises, including some of the more difficult new ones using the universal gym. Upper back a little stressed now. Rolling and stretching should jolly it back up.
10 AM

Running 15:16 intensity: (1:02 @0) + (12 @1) + (46 @2) + (5:55 @3) + (7:21 @4) 1.27 mi (12:01 / mi) +67m 10:20 / mi
ahr:142 max:155 slept:8.0 weight:162.8lbs shoes: 2014 gel kayano

One dog loop, fitting it in an otherwise full day. Thought about 2, and would have if R had not already returned from shopping, but maybe I'll go out and do the other one. Sassy took one sniff of how hot it was and declined to come.
11 AM

Running 15:05 intensity: (15 @1) + (14 @2) + (2:36 @3) + (6:28 @4) + (5:32 @5) 1.29 mi (11:42 / mi) +67m 10:04 / mi
ahr:155 max:173

Dog loop #2, after about a 5 minute interval. A little looser, still definitely hard. While I feel like my glutes and hams are engaged, they don't have a lot of power.

Running intervals 10:00 intensity: (8:30 @1) + (1:30 @5)

As long as I was well warmed up, and I assume it is at least 90 out, a set of hill sprints in order to liven my supervet shuffle. Courtesy of matzah ball on bl's log.
1 PM

Kayak 58:34 intensity: (56:02 @0) + (2:32 @1) 3.68 mi (15:55 / mi) +4m 15:51 / mi

With Rhonda, from Pleasant Valley. Including a small diversion where I looped around in a street junction to wait for her, and somehow she got by without me seeing, and then I didn't know where she was, so a few minutes of searching.

Getting a little stronger, bit by bit. Reasonably strong enough to feel like I can actually undertake our trip next month.
4 PM

Note

An interesting diversion this afternoon. We got invited to a party by my cousin Bill, whom I have only seen maybe once in the last 40 years or so. The party was a local celebration in Wilbraham for his daughter's wedding, which had taken place in North Carolina two months ago. Very glad we went. There were probably 50 people or so there, but he was incredibly gracious to me and interested, really spent all his time talking with me (and of course, I with him). Doesn't live all that far away, Chicopee, but somehow over the years we never found a reason to look each other up. His father was my mother's brother, so he is also a cousin to my cousin Matt, whom I see quite often. I also got to see his brothers, my cousins John and Michael, who were quite a bit less interested in me, and not so interesting themselves, but I am determined to make Bill more a part of my social circle, not least to re-introduce him to Matt.

The party itself was kind of unusual for us, partly because we didn't know anyone, and then partly because there was a lot of karaoke going on, not part of our experience, and not likely to be. Turns out Bill has a very fine voice, though.
