Orienteering race 42:34 intensity: (7 @1) + (1:34 @2) + (12:47 @3) + (25:17 @4) + (2:49 @5) *** 3.83 km (11:07 / km) +75m 10:08 / km
ahr:151 max:173 spiked:8/11c weight:161.5lbs shoes: 2009 Yellow NB 840s

Middle distance race at West Pt. Pretty good run. Came up short on three of the first four controls, but not a severe loss of time. Probably lost the most on #6, where I went right to it, but ran a longer route to avoid climb and apparently dawdled a fair amount on sidehill. A little anxious at the start because we were delayed by an accident on I-84 and had to hustle on the long route to the start to make our start times. Last I looked, 4th iin M60 behind the usual suspects, PG, coach and bl.

Orienteering race 18:47 intensity: (29 @3) + (17:18 @4) + (1:00 @5) *** 2.1 km (8:57 / km)
ahr:99 max:175 spiked:14/15c shoes: 2009 Yellow NB 840s

WP sprint course. Apparently didn't get the FR turned off at the end. Moving ok. Ran well enough, but blew by #2 and lost 2 minutes by the time I got back to it. Otherwise perfectly satisfactory.

Note

Dog walk this morning. Sassy had a pretty fine discovery, and has been walking around most of the day with the deer skull she found. Getting a good chew out of it, and always happy to have something in her mouth. Looks pretty strange.

Needed to post something to record the low point of my G in the last year or so..

Running (woods run) 28:27 intensity: (4 @0) + (1:00 @1) + (6:13 @2) + (16:25 @3) + (4:42 @4) + (3 @5) 3.0 km (9:29 / km)
ahr:137 max:168 shoes: 2010 NB MT840

Testing Sprint 1 course, and mightily disappointed in 305, which apparently had not picked up satellites. So distance is a guess. Nominal OCAD distance 2.4 k

Running (woods run) 25:20 intensity: (15 @1) + (1:55 @2) + (14:02 @3) + (9:08 @4) 2.88 km (8:47 / km) +53m 8:03 / km
ahr:143 max:162 shoes: 2010 NB MT840

Did sprint 1 again, this time with satellite coverage. A little faster, a few more scrapes on the shins.
5 PM

Running (woods run) 24:05 intensity: (4 @0) + (25 @1) + (4:38 @2) + (13:16 @3) + (5:42 @4) 2.9 km (8:17 / km) +60m 7:31 / km
ahr:137 max:161 shoes: 2010 NB MT840

Test of sprint 2, including a little time deciding between two locations. Took the more accessible one.

Rhonda has been running the Earth week field trips for the local elementary school since about 1998. She has a different grade going to a different place each day this week. Today we had 150 3rd graders here at Ratlum. Rhonda put together a very nice program. There were four main presenters. We had a raptor rehabilitator who brought four of her live birds and a bunch of other artifacts. She had a red-tail, a great horned owl a kestrel and another one I missed because I was shuttling speakers around. I did a presentation on the electric fence and the new forest growing inside, and on the bears who were born here four years ago. Then off to the Big Down Marsh, where local naturalist Jay Kaplan talked about the bird life there. He is so good: he found a hooded merganser nesting in a cavity in a dead tree, a hairy woodpecker nesting in another one, and a phoebe with a nest under the bridge. Also, there are four heron nests this year. There were 18 three years ago, but the snags they use are falling fast. Then on to the little pond, where another naturalist had collected salamander eggs and other pond life for display. Back up to the field where they had lunch, swung on the tire swing (thanks, J-J) and played rudimentary soccer. A very nice day. Pretty tired at the end of it, and glad that Chris was not able to go to Forest Park for the 5K. So I didn't go either.

Note

Yesterday afternoon one of the cats, in support of his cat duties, caught and dispatched a pretty fair size chipmunk. Sassy keeps close tabs on the cats and immediately wrestled it away. She resisted all attempts to tempt her off onto something else (a toy, a bone) and took off to eat it in peace. I expected this would not be a good digestive experience for her. Rhonda came downstairs this morning and stepped in the partially digested results before the light went on and she was not amused.

Morning class. First one in a while, since I first had a back spasm a couple of weeks ago. It seems to be subsiding a bit, but the joints were otherwise pretty creaky. Good to get back to it, though.

Running (run and walk) 2:27:32 intensity: (1:11:43 @0) + (1:12:17 @1) + (3:32 @2) 8.18 mi (18:02 / mi)
ahr:92 max:126

Went out to Lake Waramaug to give some encouragement to my old friend Cliff, who was entered in the 50 miles. Cliff is quite an enthusiast, but not a particularly speedy performer. He got an early start at 6:30, since he was figuring on over 13 hours on the course, so likely to be the last finisher as well as the first starter.

I came in along the north shore road, keeping an eye out for him as I drove, but didn't see him. I parked and hung out for a while saying hi to Bert Meyer. Once I figured Cliff might be coming in, I started out running clockwise hoping to meet up with him. It didn't take long. Since it was cold and rainy, he wasn't expecting any visitors, so he was quite surprised to see me.

Cliff's plan was to alternate a minute of jogging and a minute of walking. The jogging was about at my walking pace. The walking was a bit slower. Anyway, we had a nice visit. Cliff had brought himself quite an aid station, including a fresh shirt and socks for each lap, things to eat, copious medical supplies, etc, etc, etc. The lap I did took him up to 27.2 miles, and he was looking a bit rough.

I helped him get dressed for the next lap, and by then I was really cold, so headed home, stopping in Litchfield to visit Zack for about as long as he could take it - about 5 minutes.

Note

Leaving Lake Waramaug, and facing the runners on the way out, I came upon a burly older guy (although not as old as I) in shorts and no shirt in the cold rain, churning along. Ultra legend Ray Krolewicz, still at it.

Cliff called later to announce his time for the 50 miles - 13:36, which means he finished sometime after 8pm.
