Note

driving from Pecs to Zagreb - took about 4 hrs or so to cover the 300 Km. Going west from Pecs toward Barcs at the Hungarian border we passed several large nests at the top of utility poles. Storks! Or as Sonja, Zoran's daughter later told us when the word didn't jump to her mind - the birds that bring babies. Utility poles in this part of Hungary are made of concrete, in triangular form, two long sections joined at the top. From the border, south to Kutina on country roads, including a short stretch under repair, before hitting the A3 toll road for the last part. The countryside in Croatia a little more exotic looking than Hungary, and a little older looking. All the houses are brick, most of it stuccoed, all with wooden slatted screens covering the windows, a defense against the heat, well into the mid-90s.

Hike 2:30:00 [1] 3.7 mi (40:32 / mi)
slept:7.0

strolling around the old city in Zagreb, getting a tour from Zoran, in the company also of Zora, Sonja and their small terrier Mina, as well as George, Leslie and Dennis. A delightful tour, including a stop for drinks at a sidewalk cafe about midway, just below the gate to the hill where St Marks Cathedral sits. Many outdoor cafes, lots of young people out. Winding streets, cobblestones, beautiful buildings and the feel of history. A very warm day, but people coming out more and more as it cooled down after 9 or so. We were out for probably 4 hours total. The approximate route is here.

What a difference from the prior race! I was clicking along well through #7, with only a minor lapse on the route from 3 to 4 when I was unsure which trail I was on, but I proceeded to the next junction and it was fine. Then I think I was just pushing a little too hard and I started making little errors. Little errors compound quickly in this terrain. I recovered quickly at 8 and lost only about 2 minutes, but then more seriously lost at 9 and lost about 6 or 7. Long trail route to 10, reasonably easy to follow, then tried to cut a corner near the end and just couldn't get things to line up when I came out the other side. I was reduced to the hopeless occupation of checking each depression. Finally I found a small rock feature (only about 1 foot high), but I know there are few of them and they map them all. Only about 150 m away, but I still made another mistake getting to my control from there, and then was rattled enough to leave the control in the wrong direction. Nominal distance of the course was 5.7, 280 m climb. Not sure why the climb was listed as so much. The similar M60C had only 190.

Here is the map and the hapless route. I'll post a better map when I can scan.

Dennis had a great run today, finishing 6th in M60C.

Tom and Tone Hollowell were 20th and 15th in the M50 and W50 A finals. We had 7 M60 participants staying in our little guesthouse. Kind of amazing. One injured, the others all in B, C and D. My new friend Michael Thierolf was 3rd in the A final for M45, missing gold by 30 seconds on a 2 minute mistake at the end.

Note

Walking around town with George and Leslie. Seeing the sights, peeking into museums, of which there are many, having a gelato (many opportunities for that, too). And a trip to the grocery store. Lazy day.
4 PM

Gym 11:00 [3]
slept:7.25 (rest day)

Squats and pushups, alternating sets. Squats 40-40-40-40' pushups 20-20-20. Really hot, not rushing it.
5 PM

Note

Still quite hot, 35.5 C earlier, maybe 31 or so now. Strolled down to the corner pub and had a frosty 500ml draft Zlaty Brazant. Delicious. Gecko like creatures scurrying along the edges of the pavement. Start times were posted for the morning. I am out at 1050, but allowing for the car ride to Orfu, the bus ride to the assembly and the walk to the start, as well as George starting nine minutes earlier, we will leave at 830.

Note

I had a nice ride over to the meet with Michael Thierolf, who is also staying at my hotel. My start was over 2 hours before Dennis and George, so they came later. Michael is running M45, and was first in his group by several minutes both Long Qualifying days. He is a former German team member who ran in WOC93. Very nice gentleman. Today he lost his clue sheet near the first control, which caused him some difficulty, but apparently not much lost time. Clues were also on the map, but the map is big and hard to fold and unfold.

Note

Superb dinner in Pecs, celebrating G&L anniversary and enjoying the night air in the center near the finish of the sprint qualifier. Dark enough in the city to see the stars. Square dancing in the center. Very civilized and very pleasant. This is beautiful country and a very nice place to spend some time.

Long qualifying 2, nominally 5.3K. A very good run for me, with no significant errors. I really enjoyed the big negative contours and felt quite into the map. The only place I felt at all loose was coming down the steep hill through the green at the end, but I came to the area with the three depressions, and recognized right away that the furthest one was my control. I was 16th in my group on the day, which moved me up to 28th overall. I think that means I am the last to qualify for the B final, so the first starter. Dennis in C, George in D. George also had a good run today, making up for some difficulties yesterday, but he was in a faster heat.

Here is the map and my route.

Long qualifying race 1 (of 2). Finals on Friday will be based on combined time of LQ1 and LQ2 (tomorrow). Steep course, with some tricky places and some really costly errors. Nominal distance was 5.0 K, but I seem to have covered almost 7. Substantial wandering in the vicinity of 2 and 6, costing about 4 minutes on 2 and maybe 7 minutes on 6. Also, a bad route on the first half of 9, which probably cost about 3 minutes. So a 60 minute time would have been a good run for me. A long day, as we left the guest house at 8:45 and didn't get back until 5:10. A car ride and a bus ride, and starts spread out from 10:57 until 2:30 among the four of us. Some interesting and difficult terrain, but the really interesting Mecsek Mountains negative terrain shows up tomorrow. Here is my course and my route.

Jogging on the long course model map. A lovely drive up into the Mecsek mountains, some on narrow roads. Parked along the road well W of the marked start area, so just started out from the car, visiting a lot of controls and other features along the way to get a feel for terrain, vegetation, other mapped features. Lots of negative karst terrain, including depressions multiple contour lines deep, and primarily in the reentrant systems. There will be a lot of climb tomorrow (5.5%). There are a lot of trails marked, but even more in the field. Control features were easy to find, perhaps because most of them had 10 to 20 orienteers standing around them inspecting their maps. Woods mostly pretty open, but a lot of sticks on the ground, and I fell twice, once hard. Navigation was pretty easy at a slow pace. Only one control where I felt a little loose approaching it, #41, the last I went to. It was just further uphill than I had expected it. In addition to controls, I visited some veg boundaries, rock features (really small) and lone trees (only moderately distinctive).

Orienteering 17:10 intensity: (1:35 @0) + (4:57 @1) + (8:32 @2) + (51 @3) + (1:15 @4) *** 1.34 km (12:49 / km) +72m 10:06 / km

Turned off the watch and walked to the start. Because it was a long way back to the car, turned the watch back on and went in for a few more controls, finishing up near the car.

The map and the route, showing both parts, before and after the walk break from finish to start.

Hike around Pecs, down into town and back up by a different route. Tired by the time I got back. My back is pretty sore from the fall in the woods today.

WMOC Sprint M60 B final. It turns out Dennis and I both were in the B final, and George was in the C final with the same map as B. This was a longish ride from town to an old mining town in the mountains. It was a steep and intricate area with lots of buildings and open spaces, demanding a fair amount of concentration to do well. There was a long walk to the start, mostly uphill, which meant the courses ran mostly downhill. I was a little wobbly at the start, but mostly moving right along and doing ok until the last control before the go control. It was in a steep area of small trails, fences and other features, and I lost about 1:45 getting there and then not being sure.

I ended up 35th in the B final out of 80.

Here is the map, and my route. The small curving street N and W of #7 is called Gagarin Utca or Gagarin St. A pretty fine name for a street on an o-map.

After the race I ran into my OK Tyr friends Tom and Tone Hollowell and Sixten and Anna Westlund and had a nice visit, and also saw soupbone, who had a good run today, but only arrived yesterday, so he didn't have a time from yesterday and was banished to the D final.

Sprint qualifying race in the city center. Intricate and really fun. Only one big error, perhaps 1:30, but that was enough to keep me out of the A final, which I missed by 29 seconds. Group 2 had the same course as my group 1, but slower times and my time in that group would have qualified by a minute. I didn't wear the Garmin, because I wasn't sure what the enforcement standards are for GPS. I'll try to find out today. It said nothing with a display, and I had the garmin set to only show time, but I didn;'t have anybody to ask. So here is the course, but no route. I may draw one in later.

From WMOC 2011
My error was on leg 4. I went back N out of 3 and then down the inside of the wall, but I didn't see the tiny stairs when I got near the end, and wandered down to the left a bit before I realized I was in a trap and went back. Otherwise no complaints.

Then we hung around until the opening ceremony at 5:30, where George took a picture of the American contingent. Pretty sore feet after a full day on the cobblestones.

Sprint model event. A moderate jog. We had been here yesterday and walked around, but it was pretty different moving faster. Things were coming very fast. I found that I needed to focus on reading the map more and running slower. I just can't process the map quickly enough to maintain pace in this terrain. my route.

and then a bit slower, a mix of walking and slow jogging, taking a few different routes to see the sights, but not going around the track at the end. My feet did pretty well in the green shoes, so I'll wear them tomorrow. I just wore my regular glasses, which slipped down a lot, but were otherwise satisfactory. Maybe I'll use the bifocal safety goggles tomorrow., or find a way to secure the glasses better.

Hike 45:00 [3]
slept:8.5

Strolling around the sprint model with Dennis and George. The sprint model is supposed to be operational tomorrow, but we had the map and time on our hands, so we took a look. Hot and humid, and then a thunderstorm blew through while we were headed back to the car, temporarily dropping the temperature by 10 Celsius.
5 PM

Gym 10:00 [3]

Squats and pushups, until I lost interest, which didn't take long. Squats 30-40-40-40, pushups 20-20-10.

Note

Long day driving from Prague to Pecs. 700 k+, and took between 8 and. 9 hours total. The land along the roads was remarkably open, mostly big fields, including corn and sunflowers that we could easily identify, and other crops that we could not. Through Brno and Bratislava, crossing the Danube into Hungary, then on motorway skirting Budapest, and heading South to Pecs.

We had a pleasant dinner in the old town center in Pecs, where the sprint qualifier will take place on Saturday, sticking to the entranceway that is not embargoed. The finish line will be in the main square.

Our hotel is about 1.5 k NW of town, up the hill at the guest house of the academy of science, but if this is the guest house we haven't figured out where the academy is.

A person could call this a rest day, as there wasn't any exercise involved, but none of us felt particularly rested, and I had painful leg cramps from the ride.

Note

Walking around Prague with Dennis, then meeting up with George and Leslie for a very nice dinner at the Artisan cafe. Very tired from the travel. We arrived at dinner to an empty restaurant around 5. Left an empty restaurant around 6:30. What time do people come for dinner? We asked. 8 or 9 in the nice weather. That would not have been possible for us tonight, safely in bed by that hour.
