orienteering race (Coalfield Classic) 1:19:30 [4] *** 7.3 km (10:53 / km)
shoes: HH

Hard 7 - M60 (nominal distance 5.4km)

left the start & navigating to #2, until I realised that there was another circle on the map I needed to consider - fortunately was very close so didn't lose much time. Then screwed up #2 badly, even though it was an area where I had placed a control on previous events & thought I knew the traps. Same thing happened at #11 - total of about 6min lost.

run around all controls at Uni, checking number/control/flag

a beautiful morning - perfect weather all day.
2 PM

orienteering race (Coalfield Classic) 41:49 [4] 4.6 km (9:05 / km)
shoes: HH

hard 7 - M60 (nominal 3.7km)

started cautiously, because of change of scale from Uni map, & well-developed track network. Kept reasonable map contact until run into spectator control, then mentally put map away for the last part of the leg - turned right instead of left coming out of the greener part of the forest & found I was 100m away from control.

Cramped in both calves approaching the final control, so the run across the open finish chute was slow & ungainly - was barely gaining on W65 who was not going very fast at all - it's times like that when you realise that feelings of effort and pain (with little result) are not necessarily visible to anyone else.
