Orienteering race 1:02:49 [4]
Pawtuckaway Camping Weekend. Brown Course.
Shocked to see several clearcuts along the roadside heading into Neal's Cove pavilion. It was like seeing the landscape naked. All the trees gone, the shade destroyed, the undergrowth gone--only boulders, soil and slash. We stopped at the SP office on the way out and asked why. Apparently, they cut some of the forest every year to manage the forest and the habitat for wildlife, it just hadn't been done within sight of the area in which we orienteer for the past 25 years. Kinda sad to have that beautiful forest destroyed, but I understand the need to do it.
I found that I could not navigate in the logged areas. Too unsettling, couldn't focus on contours and rocks. Fumbled around and eventually found the few controls in the logged areas. After that, once in the woods, I was fine again.
