Orienteering 1:24:34 [4]

Great training opportunity for NAOC 2014, even though after running the course each day, I had no energy left for the training exercises. The Barrens reminded me a bit of Sweden, especially around Gothenburg where the bedrock captures water and you have to work your way around all the water features.
#1 was a little shaky so I had to remind myself that this was meant to be a learning experience so I needed to slow down and read the terrain. I found it hard to stay on a compass bearing on most of the legs. I paid for that on #2 when I roughly went SE and should have gone a little more easterly so I ended up at a dead end, stymied about what lay before me, knowing it was a wet and late spring so I figured the passage between the two ponds was just inundated. Fortunately, a father/son pair did the same thing just before me and figured it out making enough noise when finding the passage that it cued me in. This was going to be very tricky.

#3-6. After that, I paid closer attention to my direction and landform details and hit the controls 3-6 pretty well, the hardest part trying to decide where to cross the marshes or whether to go around them. I lost about 10sec on #5 because I did not look at the clue for control placement and had to search around the boulder/cliff for the control.

#7 taught me a couple of lessons. I had planned to run NW along the terrace for 200 m, then head NE up to the top so I could see the marsh as I followed it along. I ran on the parallel open areas, wondering where the marsh was and after about 400m stopped to relocate. The cliffiness of the hilltop helped me figure it out so I headed due E, through the reentrant seeing the little water hole with the cliff and thanked the orienteering gods for letting the control be where I wanted it to be. Overall, too slow. Need to be able to see the handrail in order to use the handrail.

#8 route choice error. I did not want to slog through the marsh at the SW end of the uncrossable marsh so I went around it to the N. Very slow going but found it just fine. Learned later about the beaver dam at the outlet. Is it safe to assume that beaver dams will allow passage?

#9. Recognized the trail/road option and if I were racing, would have taken it, but since I was getting tired, I decided to go straight to work on my navigation and found it just fine. Just very slow. Slogging through patches of low juniper is slow and difficult. Stumbling more.

#10. No problemo. Through the pond gap, followed the hillside, up the reentrant.

#11. Straight. Once through the marsh gap I drifted left making the perpendicular marshes fit my map nicely and got surprised by the trail. Oops. Backtracked to reentrant and control.

Finish. Tired and stumbling, I went SW to the trail, not noticing a slightly shorter route on the trail leading from the small buildings. Phooey.

Enjoyed the course and loved the novelty of the Barrens terrain. I love orienteering.

Orienteering race (Local event) 1:15:20 [3]

Ottawa March Highlands. 4.3 km. Fun, but cold 43 deg and post rain, though only misty when we set out. Great terrain with lots of exposed bedrock, small and large marshes, woods, clearings, etc. woods were often thick with saplings. Did well on 1-3, the screwed up 70m leg when I got distracted seeing someone I knew. Easy to get distracted in cold wet comditions for me. Had to backtrack. 5. And 6 good, but enroute to 7 I headed to 8 and caught myself when a trail junction looked weird. Lost time figuring it out and a little in backtracking. 8 and 9 went well but lost concentration going to 10 and stayed on trail too long, running way around and past 10, then having to relocate on the lake.
I left 10 knowing direction to #11 and was reading the map trying to use 3 sequential clearing to lead me to 11 when I came upon a trail which shouldn't have been there. Careful study of the terrain and then the map revealed that I was looking at the leg from 9-8 with my map upside down and backasswards. I relocated on the northern lake. I think the error came, in part, because both 9 and 10 were adjacent to large ponds, the leg lengths were similar and I managed to turn my map around, see the control by the lake, and assume it was my current location and then followed the leg, ignoring the control numbers. New mistake to add to my collection.
After that, 11-15 were good but the crap around 15 was not fun. Eager to get put of it, I just struggled to the trail, did not realize where on it I was, and turned the wrong way. Tired now, I guess. Backtracking on the trail was confusing with a large vernal marsh present that was not on the map, so I struggled to gain confidence about my location. Eventually, I decided to just head north to the lake when a guy came by, explained that the extra trail there was confusing but showed me where he thought we were (same as where I thought I was) and we both headed for the higher ground of 16. The last one was cruel, having to cross the marsh since my feet had been kept relatively dry till then. Found it fine. Long run back to car was tough as I was very sore and getting cold.
We went out to lunch to get warmed up and the. Returned for the training which looked awesome on the map, but it chose to stay dry and rest in the car. I'm too out of shape right now and wanted to do Sunday's run and training, hopefully.
Back to the Kemps for a delicious dinner of chicken stew, salad, chocolate covered strawberries and chocolate cake. The hot shower was appreciated too. Had another nice evening of visiting with Eric and Molly. Ian was out.

Hiking 1:45:00 [2]

Hiked w KH up to Buckhill overlook in Hinesburg. Beautiful, crisp morning. Still some ice hanging from the cliffs. Fun to see hepatica, wild ginger just emerging, bloodroot and a few spring beauties. Saw one morning cloak butterfly! Views from the top were awesome.

NIA (NIA) 58:00 [3]

First time at NIA, non-impact aerobics. Loved it. AMH recommended it on our walk yesterday. Nice mellow mix of stretching, dancing, yoga, free-movement done at your own pace in your own style with no pressure to conform. Simple dance moves. After first half I held back so as to protect my shoulders from overuse and my bare feet from getting blisters on the dance floor. Emphasis on being centered.
Since it was Earth Day, we focused on our appreciation of the earth and of something specific we are grateful for. For me, it was my sister, Diane, who I feared I would lose last Friday. So grateful she survived and will be OK.

Walking 1:30:00 [2]

Walked Sunset Hill up and back w KH, KM, and AMH, who served us fresh crepes with butter, lemon juice and sugar first. Being from Brittany, France, she makes a good crepe.
When we returned so KM could leave for an appt., the rest of us continued on up Oak Hill Rd to the top, the cut through the woods to the new neighborhood with the stunning views of Lake Champlain, walked down the hill, back up again, and back down to AMH's. The hill walking was great.
