Orienteering race 1:05:48 [4]
DVOA Hay Creek day 2. Rained overnight, foggy and damp but not cold.
Ran well except for #3 and #9. Rushed on #3 instead of taking my time and making sure I contoured. I was contouring on a compass bearing and when I did Not hit the control, I drifted NE and downhill. Waste of time! Had to relocate on trail, ran back about 150 m to dot knolls to make sure of my location, the went in to depression. Many more depressions there than mapped.
Enjoyed trail runs to #4, and #5, where I left the trail junction to follow the dry ditches. Hit it easily. Going to #6, I ran to the big trail intending to hit I distinct trail on the other side. Confirmed my location using dot knoll and I distinct trail on main trail, the followed what appeared to be the I distinct trail. Once over the spur,I encountered a more distinct trail but knew wherei was anyway and just headed straight down the steep slope. Control visible from 150 m away, so I tried to go fast and stumbled about 7-8 times! Maddening. Made me choose the trail route on the next leg.
Took roundabout route on trails to #8 coming in from behind. Caught up to Judy K. then Lex pn the way. Good choice I think, as I maintained my distance from Bob Lux who appeared to go straight. Blew #9. Stupidly. Went NNE to big jeep trail and headed west but had trouble relocating as I ran along. I intended to run to the T junction and then contour and compass to the control. I managed to missed the big intersection. I finally figured out that I was on the NW jeep trail approaching #10, so I went to 10, then ran back to #9. Boo hiss. Encountered Judy, Lex and ail G as I was backtracking. So much for the gains I made.
Later, after talking to others, realized that where the jeep trail had a sharp bend to the right with a smaller trail coming off of it to the left is what was mapped as a T. Bad mapper, bad mapper. Had I been more confident of where I was though, I'd have accepted that junction as the one I was looking for. Oh well. Encountered Carl at #9 which was a treat.
Ran hard to #10 and the finish. Somehow, I missed seeing Lex, Judy, and Gail at the finish. They were waiting for me to come in. It means a lot to me that they waited. I wish we'd have connected. Perhaps they were talking as I slipped through the finish, undetected. I got chilled right away, so I headed right up to the bus stop.
Fun event. Glad I went.
