Orienteering race 2:19:45 [3] 20.0 km (6:59 / km) +500m 6:13 / km

Last day. Atrocious start - small miss on 1, big big miss on 3. Felt slow and demotivated across to 5, thoughts of jacking it in prevalent.

Enjoyed the moraine terrain more. Hopped on the ba-ba/McIver train at the first water point. Rolled my ankle nicely coming out of 10- ran it off ok (sore today!).

Moved away a bit on the long leg to 11, but then a poor route to 12 and I was on the back of the train again. Mike and I got dropped a bit and were with each other until the spectator. Before this I had fallen and cut my hand, blood absolutely everywhere. My map was fairly unintelligible, so it was a good job there were plenty of trains around!

Now with Ben Stevens et al for the final loop, but lost track of the train on the long leg across to 30, and had no idea where I was. The Rocke/Malley train came through, so hopped on board until the end.

Mixed feelings - far too many errors, but probably never felt this strong physically in a race like this. 37th overall is better than I could have hoped for.

Running 10:00 [1] 1.0 km (10:00 / km)

Orienteering (Day 5 - Roseisle) 1:03:50 [5] 8.8 km (7:15 / km) +210m 6:29 / km

Mixed race - lost 2-3 minutes on number 2 - not sure what else I could have done, just couldn't get the kite. Similar on 13 - into the correct re-entrant, but just couldn't find the kite - milled around for quite a while before eventually seeing someone else punch it. Frustrating.

Minute lost on 26 too, but otherwise clean and fast running - the best area so far.

Running 15:00 [1] 1.5 km (10:00 / km)

Orienteering race 46:50 [4] 6.2 km (7:33 / km) +210m 6:28 / km

Middle Distance, Day 4. Not a good run really - ran into 1 with no plan - also skidded into the control and whacked my knee pretty hard. Shook this off OK - made another error on 6, where I couldn't make sense of the area and lost another couple of minutes. No further significant errors, but not flowing or executing the course well, and struggling to battle through the tough terrain.

Knee has swollen good and proper now, ice and Ibuprofen for the remaining days.

Running 10:00 [1] 1.0 km (10:00 / km)

Orienteering 19:48 [4] 4.5 km (4:24 / km)

Rubbish - speeding around with little direction - but it's only the rest day sprint.

Running warm up/down 25:00 [1] 3.0 km (8:20 / km)

Orienteering race (Day 3 - Culbin) 1:21:50 [4] 10.8 km (7:35 / km)

Day 3. Slight rush to the start as mistimed things.

Hit 1 and 2 fine, moving OK but finding the terrain hard work. Ploughed into the complex contours around 3 with no real plan, and paid the price - 3 minutes of dithering and hunting before I found the control.

Only a couple of wobbles for most of the remainder, until right at the end.. My legs had gone on the long, terrain run to 24. I missed 26 and 27 badly, 3 and 2 minutes apiece - lazy and tired. Glad to finish.

Did a lot better than I thought - I think my highest finish so far - other people must have found it tough today.

Running 20:00 [1] 2.0 km (10:00 / km)

Decent warm up (and down!) with Jon.

Orienteering race (Day 2 - Carse of Ardesier) 40:04 [4] 6.1 km (6:34 / km) +15m 6:29 / km

Much better today. Kept things as simple as possible. Aided by the elephant tracks that were starting to emerge, for sure. Probably lost 2-3 minutes in wobbles, and was a bit hesitant - especially towards the end - but much more satisfied with this performance.

Running 15:00 [1] 2.0 km (7:30 / km)

Orienteering race (Day 1 - Lossie) 1:14:15 [4] 10.0 km (7:26 / km) +50m 7:15 / km

Not too good - lost time on the long leg, and plenty of smaller misses abound as well. Probably to be expected given the lack of focus on orienteering this year, but I would probably should have been in the 60's.

Lucky I got another 5 shots at a good race!
