Fishbones Race 2

Great little area with a maze of ski and MTTB trails criss crossing each other. Thickish forest in between so lots of choice to run the long way around or bash through.

Got way to hot and humid with the near 100% humidity and struggled to keep going or keep the brain cool enough to make good decisions.

Ended up 4 in the chasing start for Sunday but 18 mins off the leader.

Longest race of the carnival time and distance

Orienteering race (COC Sprint) 18:57 [4] 2.9 km (6:32 / km)
shoes: Black Asics GT 2000

Canadian Sprint Champs at the University of PEI in Charlottetown.

Fairly straightforward area with well spaced buildings, the course had lots of twists and turns and made good use of the map. Went well with no significant errors through the first 17 controls, not sure if I could have done that better then ..

#18 was on the side of the athletics track and there was double fence to get inside the track, I saw what I thought was gap in the fence (on the map) and ran to it only to find it was a gap in the other fence! So had to run past the control and back and lost around 1min 20 sec which saw me drop from potential 3rd to 6th.

Went to the PEI Brewery afterwards and then a walk around the old British Fort at Amherst that overlooks the harbour, Lobster dinner tonight.

No GPS as the start was from inside the sports complex so could not start it inside the building.

Fishbones Race 1

Back at Hillsborough - same map as the COC Middle distance but 1:7,500 map which was soooooooo much easier to read than the 1:L10,000 for the middle champs. No major screw ups so a good time of 16 mins/km which crazy enough was good for 3rd! No open running here.

Hopewell Rocks Canadian High Performance fund raiser

Hopewell Rocks http://www.thehopewellrocks.ca/ is on the Bay of Fundy so VERY big tides which expose the ocean floor twice a day. The rocks are small sea stacks along a cliff line. Fun little 1.5km course out and back along the cliff edge. Went well until the penultimate control where I jumped 11 and went straight to the last control so a MP! Time was good enough for 4th but ....

Anyway enjoyable short run and then back to take a bunch of photos afterwards.

Orienteering race 1:02:04 [3] 4.29 km (14:28 / km)

Canadian O Champs, Middle distance Hillsborough New Brunswick. M55+ age group.

Complex heavily pitted area, with very slow forest. Not too much undergrowth but close trees making it slow going. Lots of tracks not all or which made sense at times but most likely due to sweat in the eyes and very hard to see with all the contours.

Tried to take the conservative route to #1 around the tracks, got onto the approach track and though down here a short way then turn in, turned too soon and cam out on the track on the far side, worked out where and back in from behind the control.

#2 & #3 OK but felt slow, #4 went up a steep slope and felt like I had over shoot, so went out to a track to relocated only to find I was really close the first time. #5 & #6 Ok from #6 had trouble making the tracks fit my view so headed north to a big track and along to an obvious attackpoint. #8 was good but made a big mistake on #9 as I lost contact and found a control on a pond, there were lots of ponds, and could not work out which one it was. Wondered a bit until I went south to hit a track and had to run back down the track to near #8 to be sure where I was and then back to the control. slow through very complex area #10 - #14 then a couple to go to the finish.

Ended up 7th, but nearly 30 minutes down on the winner but 5 mins out of 4th place, which was definitely a possibility, but not today.

GPS not happy so later ..
