I was itching for a fell race and this is a classic race route fairly nearby. Jumbo Holdsworth loop and you can choose which way round. I went Holdsworth-Jumbo which is a little slower but much more fun with a crazy forest descent.

Record was 2:20:46 by a certain Carsten Joergensen in 1996. I was aiming for sub 2:30. Starts with a long climb. 9.2k + 1130m in about 70min all pretty runnable. Then up to the trig and the ridge section was amazing to Jumbo. The cloud was down and it was raining but really still. Rocky and tussocks and reminded me of doing Stuc a Chroin in the clag.

Then smashed a little scramble and descent to Jumbo Hut then the amazing raingauge descent in woods. Slippy roots but soft footing so could jump safely. So much fun. Got the bottom with 6.5k of undulations but mostly down and was feeling good so pushed hard all the way to the end.

Happy with 5min down on Carsten in his prime. Also found out after the Jumbo Holdsworth race doesn't actually go to the top of Holdsworth (nice trig on top) but turns 150m below it along the ridge! Lost all faith in NZ mountain running at that point, along with a minute or so.

So much fun and confirmed what I thought that I am probably in good 2 hour mountain shape at the moment.

2 gels (1 caffeinated), a few jelly baby type sweets and about 200ml each of water and electrolyte.

Ran with Laura as she did a steady/tempo effort in Porirua. Nice place to run, hopefully be able to do parkrun here soon. No flat sessions for me until injury clears up or at bare minimum new shoes arrive.

Lovely day so went for a walk with Laura then ran home via boulder hill. Climbing legs a bit cooked by the end.

From old coach road along lumpy bumpy with Laura then headed south and down middle ridge from Cannon's head. Had fun smashing it down the ridge.
Hip still about a 3 niggling away. Definitely same injury recurring.
