UK Intercounties Fell Running (at Flower Scar) -- 3rd
Was keen to run this as I never have and it looks one of the most stacked fell races in Britain with the Mountain and Fell runners both turning up.
Started fast steady to get near the front for the bottleneck and singletrack first climb. Got a nice spot in about 10th and stared at Rhys' arse for the next few minutes feeling pretty good. Then just ground out the long steady climb for the next 12min or so. Dangling by myself 40m behind Eoin and Ewan with a small gap behind.
First descent on the gravel track I got up to Ewan and Eoin and caught up the 2nd pack and so was now in 5th place with a pack of four maybe 30s ahead. A grim wooded section I struggled through then onto a long very runnable descent in the woods and I gapped the group behind a bit.
Then after a climb we hit the open fell and I had the group ahead in my sights as it was rough and downhill so was moving fast. I didn't see the flags but saw them then saw them standing around. I couldn't see any flags but the group behind me shouted so I pretty much turned round and there was so many people!
The front four still had a bit of a lead but now I was with a lot of people. Pushed the amazing descent with a nicely timed steamtrain appearance in the valley. Got into 4th with Max Nicholls and Dan Howarth ahead and then I was just behind Nick Swinburn.
A tough last climb but I got ahead of Nick and ground it out and thankfully no one came past until right at the end when Holdsworth and Carl came past much quicker than me. I then pretty much sprinted to keep up on the flat/uphill road so I could contend.
Descent came and went past Holdsworth quickly and then had to go into overspeed to get past Carl. Actually caught Dan by the bottom and was by his side in the field but legs were spent and so he cruised away.
Results
Very happy and all the cross training of February/March seems to have made me a fairly good uphill runner. Struggled on some of the very runnable descents too. Don't have the leg pace of some of the road specialists like Tim Morgan.
Team did really well with all 4 of us in top 14. Unfortunately just missed out on gold by one point.
