orienteering race (urban sprint) 18:01 [5] *** 3.1 km (5:49 / km) +90m 5:05 / km

JWOC sprint.
get splits
Warmup- So I was very nervous before the start but I had done a morning run so I was pretty loose. We had a little less than an hour to warmup after getting off the bus. There was a small warmup map with a few roads and a park (which resembled the area around 15 and 16). I did a bit of running on this map and at the end I did a few short sprints, I would describe the warmup as rather short and fast.
1- There was a short run to the start triangle. I took it rather slow at the beginning, as I think is reflected by the splits, because my confidence wasn't perfect and I was trying to get into it. Also on the first leg I had a bit of a hard time concentrating on my surroundings. While I was focused on the map I ran all the way around a fountain when I could have cut across.
I had difficulty making the tight turns in Imer.
5- I intended to take a slightly different route than I did, but for some reason I couldn't find the opening I wanted, south of the greenhouses, and I wasted a lot of time slowing down there (I may have even stopped for a second). Then I got confused north of the greenhouses, making sure I wasn't going out of bounds.
7- It was obvious when to make the turn at the feature with the two fountains.
9- I think this one confused almost everyone. I actually did pretty well, only slowing down a little bit, but the wall was pretty obvious.
10- Best route, I think.
11- I remember being very slow going down those stairs.
12- I definitely made some route choice error here. I guess I intended to take a more southerly route but when I found that was too complicated I bailed out to go around on the road.
At around this time I caught Damian Konotopetz. I was trying to plan 14, but it was too late.
14- I wish I had taken the simple route around to the north. I didn't see it, and leaving 13 I was focused on what to do for the middle and end of the route, when there was tricky stuff right at the beginning of the leg. This was my biggest single mistake on the course.
15- Indecision, or rather it didn't look quite like I expected, and I started off as if to take the road around when in fact I needed to go straight up the spur.
16- This one was probably visible from 15, but I wasn't ready for it, I didn't see it, and I kind of veered and hesitated a bit. 15 and 16 were some of my most poorly executed legs because they were so straightforward (literally) yet I was very uncertain.
17- I took more or less the correct route, but with some little bobbles all the way. First I think I went around to the south of the little homestead instead of straight across. Then at the ledge after the bit of grass I had to stop completely to make sure it was crossable. I was also pretty slow going down that hill. The bit just north of the building with the walls and staircases was confusing.
18- I took the correct route, and I did it well, even though I had only considered the other way until the last minute.
Apparently I ran pretty well from there to the end. I'm not really sure what that means.
22- I almost mispunched, except not really becuase I was checking my control codes. I probably wasted about a second though slowing down.
23- I went around to the north because that's much smoother.
