Fell Relays Leg 2
After late team changes woke up not feeling as motivated and scared as I had been during the week. But a reshuffle on the morning meant we were likely to be out high up again so instantly felt more up for it.
Ben had a great leg on 1 and we went out just behind Pudsey in 5th. Set off strongly to try close the gap to P&B and Ribble Valley but soon enough Josh Jardine and Jebby ran past from behind. We were holding distance with RV though Tom was suffering gamely and they slowly disappeared in to the clag and the noises in the mist suggested we were being closed down by more. Ben Mounsey and Andy Swift caught up by Great Rigg and thought Tom's descending prowess would let us stick in to the top of Fairfield but he struggled again on the rise and Tom Owens and Ross Gollan went straight past in hot pursuit of CVFR. Eased back a bit on the plateau and let Tom come through on to the descent and he nailed the line arrived at the col just as Calder were exiting and we had nipped ahead of RV. As we started chasing on we saw Shettleston appear after maybe going walkabouts slightly. We caught Andy Swift by the tarn and though we couldn't quite hang on to the col I knew Tom had the lines down. Panicked a little on the descent as we couldn't see Calder think I spied EUOC or Helm further down. But soon enough Calder appeared though once we'd closed to striking distance we couldn't get closer. As the trail got less technical I closed on Tom, got past and told him to took in and we'd chase Calder. Chased them down and looked back....no Tom. Kept moving and looking back could see Tom suffering but eased back a bit and he caught up by the last checkpoint and we finished together in 6th
Had spied Helm Hill on the track just ahead so knew they hadn't put too much time in to us and managed to hold of the chasing pack including Shettleston which was pleasing. A shame Tom wasn't feeling a little better today as we could have been right up there in the mix.
Pete and Jack nailed Leg 3 and brought us back in 2nd which left us with a nervy wait to hope Harry had enough to hold off Crickmore. He appeared and Crickmore wasn't too far back, but far enough to know we had it so we ran down behind Harry Jukola-styley.
