High Peak Marathon 5th

Called in to run in a team with Tom Saville, Kev Saville and Stu Walker 2weeks ago and instantly regretted saying yes especially after last weekends non-event.
Ummed and ahhed all week and tried to drop out before eventually relenting and buying train tickets on Thursday. Didn't sleep well on Thursday-Friday night and was too concerned I would forget something if I slept before the train.

Set off confidently but within ourselves expected team Ba-ba to come through before we hit the climb, as it was we managed most of the way to Hollins Cross. Across to Lose then Win and went down to the dam wall before climbing back up to Stanage (not convinced by this line). Flippers Gang came past here and then Will Boothman and co also trotted past. Hit Moscar still all moving well and after a quick refuel began up to Back Tor and along to Cartledge Edge. All going smoothly, on the fading trod up to Margery Hill Kev began to tire in comparison to the rest of us but he kept plodding. Around Outer Edge and up to Swains Head before on to Bleaklow where despite my best efforts Tom still managed to navigate us well.
Hit Wain Stones after a bit of a mistake in the circle and it was just about dawn. Down to Hern Stones and on to the Pennine Way where I began to struggle a bit. My body was still ok but my head began to feel sleepy. I was grate for the slabs across to Mill Hill and got it back together after a bit of coffee and a banana. Up on to Kinder and we were closing back in on team Boothman no more than 30secs behind at Kinder Downfall and we were moving stongly again. But at this point till Kinder Low trig my vision started to go a bit weird and I went bang. Completely ground to a halt with Stu a bit concerned I think rummaged in my bag and found a couple of bars and jellybabies but still felt rubbish found some pepsi which Tom stuffed in my bag without my realising at Snake Pass and suddenly everything was ok again. The other guys didn't really seem to slow up so I had to catch a couple hundred metres up but had re-caught at Edale Cross. After that it was lovely and slabby again nearly all the way in so we were able to keep moving. Boothmans team were moving away from us again here and Nicky Spinks' team was re-catching us for the 3rd time.
We had another stint of the world's slowest race from Rushup Edge to the finish but held them off as Tom and Stu were pushing me and Kev along the road (I hate road finishes!). Took and hour or so off Kev's personal best which he was chuffed with.

Legs not too battered at the end no the initial stiffness has worn off so it was good fun but very lucky with the weather I think.

Good to see Nic, Pez, Jim and Shane win

Note
(rest day)

Decided not to run Sunday after being utterly pants physically on Saturday and having a bit of a tight calf. Didn't feel like I missed out in the driving rain but a bit disappointed to miss running on Bigland. Again tonight I felt pants, just drained for some reason.
