Walking 3:20:00 [2]

Led SC hike on west loop of Lost Valley. Fun trail and just a few mountain bikers.

Tuesday Sep 10, 2019 #

Note

Drove to Thunder Bay to visit David Jones who I'd taught with for 3 months in 1973! He was an Iban adopted by Canadian couple who settled in Thunder Bay. Ah, so many stories to share!
Then walked around downtown and marina. Gritty old town with some signs of recovery - strong Finnish influence.
More clouds and rain - Time to head home.

Walking 1:20:00 [2]

Great guided talks at Grand Port age National Monument followed by hike on Canadian side to High Falls on Pigeon River.

Sunday Sep 8, 2019 #

Note

Ferry back to Grand Port age. Group dispenses. To Grand Marais for dinner, beer, laundry, and then back to Hungry Hippie Hostel for 1 night.
Summary:
I did it!!! Body was often tired but never sore. Left knee held up MUCH better than expected.
Excellent Sierra Club leadership in terms of prep, expertise, food, and spirit. Pace pushed a bit hard 2 days.
Excellent group of 7 hikers (5 F) aged 64 to 78. I was middle in terms of age and pace. Great camaraderie, support, persistence, cooperation, chatting.
Carried 35+pounds until last 2 days - challenging! They appreciated my outdoor experience and Northwood knowledge.
3 moose, 1 rabbit, 1 squirrel, several loons and many calls. No wolves, foxes, or beaver but lots of beaver dams. Fewer birds and small mammal sightings than expected. Tremendous variety of mushrooms, ample thimble berries and a few raspberries and blueberries.
