Orienteering 1:50:00 [3]
Two training runs at Hawn.
Recent (Jeff Sona) Green course and 'new' course, both starting from picnic area. New course included notorious flat ditchy area SSW of shelter.
Overall, a great day:
1. Weather - sunny and warm.
2. Area was probably burnt this spring. Even flat area with two ruins had good visibility and pace. Deadfall not too extensive but did add challenge of diverting off-course and correcting.
3. Stayed in good contact with map - kept errors small.
4. Lesson: when approaching 'rock or rock face on hillside' USE the AP, don't just wave at it - especially when approaching from above.
5. Pace counting and check-off features was effective and remembered to use them usually.
6. Only chiggers were at END of 2nd run around left knee - scraping and washing worked - no itching!
7. Body parts felt better than expected - even during and after 2nd run. Pace was slow but recovery was quick and legs & knees held up. Endurance is fine.
8. Midway Bar is fine - Sam Adams, BBQ chicken sandwich, and strong coffee.
Met a young TN guy & dog in parking lot and camping. He'd been devastated by chiggers in Trail of Tears SP. Swore they covered his tent, quilt, clothes, etc. - even threw out quilt and some clothes. We talked about orienteering and maps. I mentioned using the sun - amazingly he didn't know that the sun "always" rose in East, in south in midday, and set in West (after hearing 'east, south, west', he guessed that sun set in north). Nice guy on long camping road trip.
