Cycling 25:00 [1]

Ride to Cherokee Jazz Crawl. Several indoor and outdoor jazz bands. Cherokee looked better than ever. Mexican west of Jefferson; antiques east of J; more rehab, bars and restaurants than recently - becoming a real neighborhood. Snack at Black Bear Bakery.

Orienteering 4:30:00 [2]

Another long beautiful day at HSP with Fran. Nearly all tapes hung - new areas of park explored. More pine forests than I'm used to.

Turkey O' preview - some long, long legs for the runners! Good vistas, boulders, and bluuffs included for everyone.

Orienteering 5:30:00 [2]

What a great fall day to be out. Two missions: Confirm a good route with rock highlights from Pickle Spring Natural Area to western Hawn for future Sierra Club & Let's Hike hikes. Hang about 10 tapes for the Turkey O'.

Great hiking route - lots of new rock features explored on PS & Hawn maps. Orienteering was very clean. Yes walking, but long day and I often day-dream while doing such field work. Moved a few controls from arm-chair route. West of HSP road, woods tend to be wide open and minimal climb - and lots of 'new' features. Several deer and one turkey.

No confusion until coming in about 1 hour before dark: Off Hawn map, back to PS map, same route as way out but harder to read. Goal: due West until creek and trail - but found Box canyon with 15m walls!!!! - WHATTTTT? Totally new and unexpected feature, getting dusky. I MUST be on PS map but where? Walk out of canyon to north, turn west, twin bridges! Return on trail.

Legs very tired, knees achy but not bad. For 5.5 hours, I feel pretty good.
