Orienteering 1:08:00 [4]

Very challenging Green Course at Hawn vi Eric. Very sloppy parallel error on #2-3. The beginning was 'too easy': "down reentrant, turn right". I turned right into medium reentrant, not the next large reentrant. Ugh - slow recovery, never imagining what I did wrong. Got to control circle. On map I saw two of three small spurs - explored wrong one extensively. Very hesitant since I wasn't 100% sure of location.

Rest of course much smoother but hesitation in circles lost some time. Once a better route would have helped. Twice, pace count would have helped.

Overall, a good training run

Orienteering 45:00 [2]

Control pick-up of tight set of Red Controls: 4-9. Good map reading in complex area. Pushed coming and going.

Running warm up/down 8:00 [1]

Warm-up - I really need longer warm-ups.

Running 15:00 [4]

Ran White course in campground as a sprint. Good training (no lost time; looked ahead well) though it was not the "intended" sprint that others ran.

Orienteering 2:30:00 [2]

Hung last tapes at Shirley Quad and checked out several trails. Very good map contact all 3 days. With lack of visibility (until leaves fall), I suspect that this was good practice for NAOC's likely vegetation. Of course, I walked all 3 days but often I lose focus walking.

Also, met with Gail at USFS office in Potosi. She needed a map with all of my controls on it to get it approved by Mark Twain biologist and archaeologist. Sure glad I was able to get work done unusually early this year. She seems very supportive - I hope that accommodation will involve moving only 1-2 controls.

Walked around Trout Lodge. Looks to be great HQ for Turkey O'. Also won one game of mini-golf!

Orienteering 5:30:00 [2]

Got most of rest of tapes hung for Turkey O'. Also spent considerable time checking out and rough mapping new trails. Looks like they might be building a single-track MB trail - if so, it looked quite long and challenging.

Orienteering 4:00:00 [2]

Mark Young arranged for Beth, Ed, Fran, and me to stay at Trout Lodge while Beth and Ed update Trout Lodge O' map and I took opportunity to hang tapes for Turkey O'. Thank you!

No ticks or chiggers today. Woods are in pretty good shape already and visibility will really improve once the leaves fall. Found 15-20 different species of mushrooms - wow! None were familiar enough to eat.

Orienteering 1:12:00 [4] 5.8 km (12:25 / km)

Reran "team trials" Green Course at Hawn. Nice course - surprising little climb. Very clean run: good route planning and execution; maintained map contact; strong on minor course corrections. #8: Did not notice 'sand bank' - probably would have seen control; overran it - corrected while "leaving for #9" - only time I lost map contact. (Hesitation and relocate - 2 minutes). Ran 58 minutes at A-meet (2nd place in age group) - 72 this time. I pushed pace most of time but likely: I'm slower; more adrenaline and focus at A-meet; finding feature vs. control costs time.
