Orienteering 5:50:00 [4]
6 hour rogaine at Telemark offered by MNOC. I paired with rookie Henry of Minneapolis - about age 20. We had a great 2.5 hours - he picked up map reading very quickly and had several 'good catches' of my decisions. He's not an endurance runner and I let him go out too fast. On long 8th leg, we lost map contact since we were using a trail we'd been on. Got totally lost. Took 80 minutes to relocate and find a control (not the one we'd aimed for). First, there were many more trails on ground than map; a few mapped trails had faded; and logging affected part of map. I didn't adapt as well to these 'facts' as other teams. All moraine terrain, of course. Then we got 3 more controls. I had mild leg cramping at about 4 hours; Henry hit the wall at 5 hours. We walked in slowly. We found 12 of 24 controls - optimal for us would have been 17-19. Best team was sweep in 4.5 hours. Of course, MNOC has some of the top AR and rogaine teams in US - several are going to 24-rogaine in Balck Hills this weekend.
But a great day with MNOC group. The excellent potluck kept people around for another hour or so - perfect weather, no PI or ticks, only a few mosquitoes.
