Note
(rest day)

Haven't felt so tired for a long time! It was a hard week but enjoyable none the less.

Orienteering race 59:02 [4] *** 7.0 km (8:26 / km) +250m 7:09 / km
spiked:9/15c shoes: Innov8 X-Talon 212

6 Day - Day 6 - Ardchattan. An area which should have suited me but this was just a race too far! Tried to convince myself that I was up for it but top three positions were already settled and Dixie wasn't even running due to a pinkie strain so not a lot to aim for. Splits show that I was running well at times but navigation wasn't keeping up and I had several shockers which are too painful to record here. Not sure if it was just tiredness but I found map difficult to interpret in places and thought the mapping of boulders was at best random. Dropped one place overall to 5th.

Note

Day 5!!!! Up at 6 and at assembly by 7.30. More toilet mayhem! Even had to pull the equipment van out of a ditch. Got start running on time - just - then stood for 4 hours directing operations. Unsure whether to run but decided a late start was too good an opportunity to miss so set off at about 2.20 after supervising clear up of start. Not ideal preparation!

Orienteering race 58:08 [4] *** 7.0 km (8:18 / km) +245m 7:04 / km
spiked:13/16c shoes: Olway

6 Day - Day 5 - Loch Nell & Shenavallie. A real curates egg of an area, wooded hills, bog, bracken, beach, gorse, bushes did I mention the bogs? Thought it was going to be one of those days when I found a large unmapped crag at 1 which cost 1 min. Settled down after that and ploughed round the boggy "elephant trail". Overshot reentrant at 10 and couldn't find 12 in the bracken - even with the elephant trails! Both cost ~ 1 min. 4th, 3.02 down on TT but only 1.05 on Dixie and 17s on Bilbo. Totally "pooped" by finish.

Orienteering race 1:04:06 [4] *** 7.3 km (8:47 / km) +225m 7:36 / km
spiked:13/23c shoes: Innov8 X-Talon 212

6 Day - Day 4 - Torinurk. Mostly open area with patches of wood. Bad route choice to 5 cost 2 mins, then scrappy through 5 controls in wood near the finish cost another couple of mins. 8th, 9.40 down on TT but only 3.30 on Bilbo in 2nd and more annoyingly 1s on Dixie.

Note

Day 5 was to be our helping day which this year meant we had to dismantle Day 4 and set up Day 5. I was in charge of one of the starts and got it sorted fairly quickly but when I returned to assembly it was a shambles! Traders and toilet lorries stuck and a general lack of organisation. Had to put my tractor driving skills to good use.
Stopped for chips in Oban and got to bed at midnight.

Note
(rest day)

Down to Seill Island and across to Easdale. Climbed a wee hill and had a picnic, soaking up the rays and admiring the view. Bliss!

Orienteering race 58:01 [4] *** 6.6 km (8:47 / km) +325m 7:03 / km
spiked:12/14c shoes: Olway

6 Day - Day 3 - Creag Mhic. Running well, navigation generally not too difficult but switched off going to a crossing point between 2-3 and went completely awol - 3.5 mins lost. Another miss at 12 mainly due to tiredness, 1+ min lost. Finished 5th 6 mins down on TT, could so easily have been 2nd or 3rd!

Orienteering race 1:05:47 [4] *** 5.9 km (11:09 / km) +230m 9:20 / km
spiked:0/17c shoes: Olway

6 Day - Day 2 - Ardnaskie. Shocking, worst I have ever orienteered! Couldn't cope with early start, rain, but particularly vegetation colouring which I couldn't see on the map. 20 mins down in 36th.

Orienteering race 50:28 [4] *** 5.9 km (8:33 / km) +340m 6:38 / km
spiked:11/15c shoes: Innov8 X-Talon 212

6 Day - Day 1 - Dunollie & Dunstaffnage. Reasonable run apart from a stupid mistake when I switched off going top a crossing point. 3rd but 5 mins down on Tim Tett.
