Trail / Terrain Run 5:51:00 [3] 38.45 km (9:08 / km) +1714m 7:28 / km
shoes: TerraUltra 270

Home to Mt Keen and on over to Ballater.
Celebration of another year gone by albeit four days early.
With JM, SD, S&DW, and PM.
A bit of a sequel to “Lochnagar the Long Way” from 2020.
Up over Corybeg and down to Birse Castle. Then the steep climb up Gannoch before the undulations of the ridge all the way to Mount Keen.

Down to the bridge near the Shiel of Glen Tanar, then the track over towards Ballater. Met T with the bikes at the bottom of the Glen Muick road.

Nice running conditions, albeit cloudy on high. Lots of “dry” peat to run on along the top. Hugely enjoyable with the company and nice to run off Mt Keen in the sunshine.

Road Bike 1:03:00 [3] 26.77 km (2:21 / km) +199m 2:16 / km
ahr:128 max:195

Remarkably intact after the run but was expecting the worst anyway. Turned into a very fun spin home with only rare slight cramp twinges.

With S&DW and PM for the onward leg via South Deeside Road and the Birse loop. Only turned out 120m too long, according to Sir Garmin, with no on the day “contrivance”…apart from the Birse loop perhaps..but that’s far nicer way home anyway :-)

Slight right heel soreness for some reason

Note

Dee swim with T, IW, JD & AS at Potties. Probably in for 15 minutes. Trying to ween myself off the wetsuit for very last bit.

More Glen Dye checking
No-one, and nothing else, about, excepting a couple of roe, a kite and a cuckoo....and by far the biggest rootstock I've seen in my entire life....made up from at least four big Scots Pine.

More tag checking at Glen Dye.
In company with many a cuckoo.
Knackered from 16x1 last night.
One or two surprises / issues, as is somewhat normal during such operations.

Checking tags at Glen Dye for Scottish Champs.
Lovely morning. One particular part of the area is the best I've ever seen it. Has matured considerably and with the bracken not yet started some areas of open marsh and larch and scots pine woodland are just fabulous. And the storm damaged parts have been avoided....

Half done

DR Glen Tanar
w/u, 16 x 1/1, w/d
Large group out..maybe 20. First three of sixteen reps fairly steeply up then the rest somewhat undulating. Pleased with all of those that weren’t seriously up as felt I could hold my own with everyone who wasnt called SP, DW, SW, a guy I didn’t know, and FJ.

Banchory SOUL street O race from HoB Primary
Old haunts. Well, not really as a good bit of it was still forest for the majority of time we were local.
Nice run out. Parts of the area are somewhat devoid of alleyways and run throughs which limits things somewhat and means long road legs to get round a block are inevitable,

Ran hard; possibly took longer option #1 to #2; scrambled through the trees to #4 missing a path; took a longer option #9 to #10, where the SI unit was missing; took northerly brambley route to #11 but came upon unmarked uncrossable fence and backtracked. Felt to run and navigate ok. Enjoyed it.

Note

More garden stone-walling S&C later on.
