Orienteering race 1:18:33 [4] 9.9 km (7:56 / km) +120m 7:29 / km
shoes: Salomon speed cross 3

3rd leg mens A.
Tom and Ian did the business on the first 2 legs sending me out in the lead. My plan was to take it safe and stop any 5 minutes errors that seemed to be common with other teams on the 1st 2 legs. I went all the way down the track before heading north to #1 on Toms advice and although it wasn't great terrain, it was a safe start.
I slowed right down for 2-4 and used large AP's. I first lost time at #5 where I found the control on the gully but took a few attempts from here to get the right bearing. I just didn't go far enough the 1st time. I was too close to the western path for 6.
On #9 I ventured too far N and came into the control with FVO. I hung on to #12 checking my control codes but had to let him go there as I thought I was riding my luck for too long before the gaffling might start again. It turned out I could have had at least another 3 simple controls if I had followed closely.
I played it very safe and spiked all the controls in the tank track area before going into the last open heathland.
I then blew a few minutes on the pit at #23 just the same way I did at the southern nights. You had to be right on top of it and as before I couldn't seem to make the rough open fit.
I was scrappy to the end but kept onto 2nd place, just. Although I dropped 10 mins to FVO I was happy that I stuck to my plan and it was probably the best option for the team that I did a night leg.
The boys finished off well and we ended up in 2nd place behind a solid FVO and infront of (I think an underachieving) Lakeland.
Great result.

Bike 1:35:05 [3] 31.55 mi (3:01 / mi)

Home past Legoland, Virginia Waters, Chertsey and RP. Loads of energy left at the end to attack a few decent cyclists.
