Bike 1:27:17 [3] 28.31 mi (3:05 / mi)

Aided now again by a little tailwind, I was bouncing off the walls.

Tuesday May 29, 2012 #

7 PM

Orienteering race 23:12 [5] 3.5 km (6:38 / km)
shoes: Asics 2160 #2

Well another mis punch but this was definately my own fault.
I was a bit hesitant to the first control and then went into the childrens play area on the way to #4.
I worked out #5, 6 and 7 in good time so was very confident. I then ran right past #8 looking ahead at someone going into #22 thinking that it was mine. I did wonder on the way to #9 that the map didn't fit very well but ran on.
I had no problems through to #14 except for trying to find 11 but no real time losses.
On the way to #15 it dawned on me that I had missed 8, I stopped for a bit cursing my stupidity and then decided to carry on.
16&17 were fine and then I nearly went to #20 for 18. I corrected and then missed #19 as it was on the wrong nearer bus stop which I didn't notice as I was focused for once on my target.
All was left was a minor hesitation on #21 checking the code and then a sprint to the finish.
A very well planned course and I had predicted the few surprises in the results as this was always going to be tricky.

Orienteering 24:28 [3] 4.25 km (5:45 / km)
shoes: Asics 2160 #2

The course is 4.25km but it's a little urban in places so I ran 5.72. Should be a good one.
I'm loving this hot weather:-)

Sunday May 27, 2012 #

11 AM

running race 21:01 [3] 2.68 mi (7:51 / mi)
shoes: Salomon speed cross 3

Yesterday I was really up for a race with Dave but today I had no mojo. I tried to give myself a talking to on the start line but it didn't work. I got halfway to #3 before telling Dave to "have a good run and see you later".
Enjoyed the sun instead.

Orienteering race 19:40 [5] 4.5 km (4:22 / km) +80m 4:01 / km
shoes: Asics ds skyspeed 2

Primrose Hill Park O.
A really well planned event using all the trees and the amount of people enjoying the sun made for a good busy race.
Set off in pursuit of Colin and caught him at #8 where we both went too far left. Other than that it was pretty clean.
The only problem was apparently I didn't punch #27. I know I punched it and
heard the beep. Hey ho never mind.
8 PM

running warm up/down 5:00 [1] 1.0 km (5:00 / km)

Bike 1:08:47 [2] 19.14 mi (3:36 / mi)

I really didn't enjoy the commute this morning. Woke up with a splitting headache and felt like poo. No energy in my legs so took the ride very easy.

Feeling much better this afternoon and the weather was perfect. Took a longer route home through Windsor, Chertsey and Richmond Park.

Up the hill to the same old start.

Orienteering race 51:10 [5] 7.6 km (6:44 / km) +250m 5:47 / km
shoes: Salomon speed cross 3

Blean Wood.
Last time in October there were 5 track junctions on the course. I went there feeling optimistic and was let down when I got the control descriptions. There was 8 this time and 7 controls where you went in and back out in the same direction. A shame because the middle race here three years ago was very well planned.
I dropped just under a minute going right past #5.
Too far left for #11 and slow to #16.
12 PM

running warm up/down 6:51 [1] 1.49 km (4:36 / km)

Nice and straight forward on the nav and I don't think I could have saved any time on what I ran. I started to feel last nights race on the way to #8 so dug in.

Orienteering race 36:06 [4] 5.85 mi (6:10 / mi)
shoes: Salomon speed cross 3

Trail Challenge Bushy Park.
Mixed weather tonight. Cold wind, a bit of sunshine and some rain.
Fortunately it wasn't a fast start and I settled into a nice pace along side Rich Barrett. We were pretty much stride for stride for the first half taking similar routes until he seemed to drop off a little to #6 and then again to #7.
I finished off feeling good and within myself so didn't push the pace. As I forgot my Garmin, the distance is an average off all who used there's.

Monday May 14, 2012 #

Bike 1:22:50 [3] 24.36 mi (3:24 / mi)

Fortunately the rain stopped in time. 3 laps.

running warm up/down 5:00 [1] 1.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Asics ds skyspeed 2

Orienteering tempo 59:24 [4] 14.4 km (4:08 / km)
shoes: Asics ds skyspeed 2

Southfields Street O.
The last one in the series. The 1:15000 map and reduced scoring made for a slightly different race.
A lot more running which suited me even if this was the 4th race in as many days. I decided only to go at tempo pace which paid off as at the end, my calves and hamstrings were certainly feeling it.
My route choice was awful but I wasn't bothered as I enjoyed going around a new area.
Managed to squeeze into 2nd place for the series behind Ed and in front of Matthias completing a SLOW 1 2 3.

Orienteering race 52:47 [5] 8.0 km (6:36 / km) +210m 5:50 / km

Kendal Urban.
Really nice to get onto an urban map again. Some good route choice legs and a little bit of intricate control pick.
I went up a dead end on the way to #2 but didn't lose much time. The housing area went ok if a little boring going up and down the same road 3 times. Although I missed a junction on the way to #9.
I think I got legs 10 & 13 correct and picked a good northern route to #18.
I should have gone west to #19 but I think going north from #20 helped me check #23 on the way to #21.
I messed #28 up going in too early as I mistook the statues in the main street. I also went in too early for #31 losing more time.
Overall not a great run but very enjoyable. Looking forward to more of these this summer.

running warm up/down 5:00 [1] 1.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Salomon speed cross 3

Orienteering 37:35 [5] 6.3 km (5:58 / km) +255m 4:58 / km
shoes: Salomon speed cross 3

Brit relays 1st leg.
Got off to a bad start when after setting my compass, I still ended up at the boulder to the right. By the time I relocated, the pack was gone over the hill.
I was then clean through to #7 gradually picking up the pace and the distance to a few runners off the back of the pack. I missed #8 to the west but nothing major. I was starting to get on ther back of Will Hensman but then went over the wrong hill to #10 and never saw him again. Completely blew it here and only relocated off when I asked Dan where his control was on his map. Got it back together again if a little scrappy.
Not the best of runs but Tom and Ollie were solid lifting us up past BAOC and into 11th.

Event: BOC 2012

running warm up/down 5:00 [1] 1.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Salomon speed cross 3

To the start with Ollie.

Orienteering race 1:31:57 [5] 11.0 km (8:22 / km) +530m 6:44 / km
shoes: Salomon speed cross 3

I started off at a steady pace knowing it was going to be a tough day.
I got the first 3 if a little slow. My legs at this point weren't that happy so I kept the pace steady. I was reading the contours well and the flags kept popping up in the right place.
From 7-13 the terrain was fantastic and other than a few waist high bogs, good to run through. At this point I was only a minute behind the top 2, navigating well but absolutely buggered.
I then started to make some stupid decisions I can only put down to fatigue.
I tried to simplify the map going up the hill towards #14 and bounce off the green. This didn't happen and I somehow thought I'd climb over the rocks to the fence. STUPID.
I should have seen that I was meant to stay high so lost 2.30mins.
I got dragged off by another runner at #15 and went too low(1.30).
Then came the big F#%" UP. I decided to go north for the route choice to #19. After getting nearly to the uncrossable wall, I then went further north and eventually had to climb too much into the control. The southern route which I saw, was so much better and with no climb(2 mins).
At 20 I went up the steep bank way too early and ended up a long way east of the control and took too long reading the map to get there(3min).
The next few were fine until #25. I went on the next path west and with the smaller scale, couldn't make out the crag and knole(2.30).
A definite run of 2 contrasting halves.
MUST GET BACK INTO TERRAIN.
