Went into this aiming to be clean, hoping that my stamina would pay off and I could make some ground.
Some silly directional errors early on, including wrong crossing to #2 and ending up in the archery place en route to #3 - oops! Had caught Tim Beale (not Ian Beale...!) at 4 but then poor rc/bearing resulted in getting caught in some gorse and I caught him back up at the end of the leg. Lewis and Thingy Omdal had caught me 3 and 2 min respectively (pressumed Ant would be somewhere ahead). Big group got together at 9/10, and used them to keep going on the long leg to 11. However, once we crossed the road and the powerlines they all disapeared, I had a distinct lack of plan wrt getting the control and floundered. Eventually picked up by Galloway and another, then Ben Stevens. Took me mid-way to 12 to catch Rob Kelly back up, so must have lost quite a bit at 11!
Got back onto some sort of train by 15 before putting the boot in to get rid of Hargreves and guy in swiss top, catching Eddie and Lewis at the road crossing. They went neck-deep in a marsh, much to the hilarity of Keith and me and we were together through spectator. Then lost 90sec on #25 - the only nav blunder of the day and Rhys caught me up. Struggled a bit as we ehaded back out - only really keith and Eddie around so lost a bit of impetus. When Spunky appeared (and Rhys reappeared) at 29 there was a bit more impetus and, despite being slow to 30 I got it bang on. Up the hill to 32 I wanted to drive on but Eddie's arse got in the way through the bracken. Cherry, Kalle and Aiden were motoring into 32 but I was happy to bring it home alone, with a knee-slide to finish off the week.

Not too bad, but not great. Leaving the classic to the last day was tough, and I hoped it would play to my strengths a bit more, but it seems planning, execution and concentration aren't my forte when knacked after a hard week!

Today's casualty count: Tied with a Finn, beat a German, a Frenchman who's name I recognise, a couple of Austrians and a lot of Irish

Mmm, Roseisle, you sexy thing.
Nearly ran past #1 but caught 1min on Galloway (who was running in from the opposite direction). Used him to help me find #2 but I didn't have it in the legs to keep up from there. Pretty clean though and picked up DanFR at 6/7, but couldn't pull away - nothing in the legs. Miss on 11 (30s) was the biggest mistake of the day. Jegor came through there and I tried to stick to him a bit but now resigned to not having a bit extra (not that I'd have stuck with him for long anyway). Some chariots of fire stuff down the beach with Harold, a few fluffs at 14 and 19, I pulled away from Dan at one point but he got back on as I slowed again on my own. Once through the open section I really suffered and let Dan do most of the work - but when he and Harold mucked up 29 I was there to pounce and lead them into the finish.

Confidence through 1 and across the road was built upon when I reeled in my 1min Irish National man at 2, getting ahead crossing the river. (He then stayed in my back pocket util spectator). Into the open to 3 we picked up Ian, used him to lead me to the correct lump before pulling away. Fortuitous on #6 where I never saw the small hill I was attacking, but change in levels nearby saw me OK. Chris Heppenstall helped into 8. Ended up a bit high on 10 (30s) but then got my direction all wrong crossing the open leaving it, adding extra rough terrain and climb. Struggled a bit through spectator and a small miss on 13. Got ahead of Irish Lad (has a reputation for following aparently) again through hitting 14 well, but poor bearing out of it, then trying to be to clever into #16 lost me maybe 45s total. Passed by german 3min man on the run into the last control so dug in.
99th/150+. Enjoyable but slight frustration at being close to a good run. Beat a lot of Irish and an Austrian. Nice feeling to drive the train - so I can go at a decent speed on my own Nav!

Note
(rest day)

Too cool to orienteer on a rest day (and for once 'cool' isn't code for 'hungover'). Had grand plans of heading back out to the more technical bits of yesterday, but ended up lounging about at Euromeet and Lossiemouth's inferior beach

Oooh, Blisco caught up with me today. Had it been nice Culbin I might have got away with it, but retro hairy Culbin gave me a Clubin'. Not up to the job physically today unfortunatly. A few navigational indiscretions (bearing to 2, not picking up features to 4) were sorted fairly quickly, but still more time loss than I'd like. Regborn steamed through me at 12. Had a quick look at my map after leaving it and he was gone, and I didn't know where I was! Tullster was about but I was always infront and somehow we fell into the control - before James pulled away easily. A bit too hesitant from then on, especially in the open areas and at 19, but got them all with minimal time-loss. One daft loss at 24(?) - just off a massive ride! and a banana into 25.

Much better than yesterday, both nav and weather wise.
Other than a directional wobble towards 2 and initially getting on the wrong ridge at 5, both of which were sorted quickly and with minimal time loss, I was clean up to #6. I told myself to be careful with direction out of 6 as I knew 7 was tricky, but I missed east and lost 90secs (even knew from the small enclosure my direction out of 6 was bad). Got going again through to 11, where I caught Tom Cochrane (started 1 min after me). We got together at 12 and started upping the tempo - he did a bit more nav and I did a bit more pace-setting, but there was only one point (#19) where I blindly followed not knowing where I was. We then took a few different lines but kept on popping out together at controls - it was great fun to run fast and head-to-head, and having that safety net allowed me to cut out focussing on a lot of the crap I should ignore mid-leg. Tracks also helped, of course (at one point I reached a gorse bush which had a new path straight through it!). some_text

In the first rain I've seen in about 6 weeks, my Scottish 'campaign' got off to a fairly inauspicious start, spannering at least 2 minutes on a very easy #1. I then decided to stay away from the big path everyone else was using (I pay to play in terrain!) which wasn't the best idea with my rusty technique and reluctance to look at the map. I did at least find the control-on-a-building others lost time on, but overshot #5 and was too slow on the long legs. Was OK through to 13 before wobbling in the circle to 14, losing a lot on 15 (but not quite in Harold's league, thankfully) and going walkabout on 17 and 18 in the green. At least 7min lost, and 10min down on where I want to be. Still, at least things could only get better...

Elbows out along the road. Stuck with Jack Wright until we hit the steep path and then I started going backwards a little bit - with a pack but not people I'm used to as Jack, Noel, AndyB etc. got a good gap on me by the top. Hit the descent at a mostly sustainable pace, reeling people in before ramping the pace up on steep bits to go through big groups. Hit the road and went through Jack just after the cattle grid at a ridiculous pace. Was struggling to hold on after going through Chris Leigh (clubmate), thought I'd gone too early and him and Jack would come back but managed to maintain a decent pace into the finish. A shame to to make the top 50, but good for me in a short race.
