Holme Moss. 2nd to Karl Gray (albeit 10.5 mins back)

Lovely and sunny at the cricket club but a bank of cloud from Holme Moss down into Crowden provided lovely running conditions and some reduced visibility. Time to build a bit of consistency and confidence, main aim to get a good day in the legs before Borrowdale.

Followed Karl to the first drop but then he eased away to Holme Moss. A totley lad (Sam Allin) was between us, with a Glossopdale on my shoulder. Put a bit of effort once into the mist to drop Glossop and caught Sam when he choked in the mist and ran back towards me. He had no clue where he was so I dragged him over some rough lines into Crowden Brook and up to laddow warming to the sneaky racing I like. Made a concerted effort to gap him on the flags to Black Hill and ran this well, but it didn't feel like I could find the fast cruisey gear I can normally churn out at this point - bit of strength missing at moment.

Made a hash of the descent from Holme Moss, dropped too low in a trod missing the flagged trod, so had to hack around eventually regaining the flagged bit. Karl did the same (so missed his record!) and so (thankfully) did the totley guy as I was not in the mood for a race up and down the last hill. Rich Robinson pulled through to 3rd 4mins back.

Generally pleasing after last few weeks. Bit too soon to Borrowdale to really get going but we'll see. Very dry fast conditions, only about 1min quicker than 2016 which was wet underfoot but I didn't get lost, so really only about 4 mins quicker. Good team performance with Chris 8th and Paul 9th for the team prize (over CVFR 1, 10, 11), ably backed up by Hulleymonster in 12th.

Hannah was doing the Inglebuggar mountain race so I had a jog up and down. Teamed up with some Barlick types to keep the effort a bit more honest on the way up.

Little Rob leading on way up, Josh Boyle at the finish (rob close 3rd). Top of descent is rocky innit.

Up and down in Rivelin. Was going to do an extra climb but my legs went top path before my head could respond.

Mycroft moaning about 'the hill'
It wasn't a hill but I managed to put a gap on people 'up' it in the race. Purely psycological.

Donny 5km.

A new PB after feeling off for 6 weeks and no specific training save the odd stride. I suppose I can't be too miffed though it shows how weak my distance PBs are. However I think I'd rather be in the hills at the moment than pushing for times - might save that for the winter and next spring.

Felt alright, lost a group after a km and a bit so in a bit of no-mans land. A couple came past and eased away including Bronwen Owen who finished just ahead, but I picked a couple off in the last km, including the usual Tom Halloway 'scalp'.

Mms in 3.10, 15, 18, 27, 14. At least only 1 dropped really low but quite a difference!
